A Southern California man known around his neighborhood for turning his front yard into a sea of American flags and pro-Trump decorations has died days after he was brutally beaten outside the home locals had come to call the “Trump House.”

Kerry George Sheron, 69, was attacked outside his Escondido home on May 20 and later died at a hospital on Sunday, according to the Escondido Police Department.

His death has shaken the community and raised troubling questions about what led to the violent encounter. Police have not publicly revealed a motive, and authorities have not said whether Sheron’s political display played any role in the attack.

But for those who knew him, the loss is deeply personal.

Sheron’s family said he was an Army veteran, a man of faith, and a supporter of President Donald Trump. His wife, Maria Garcia, told KGTV that she wants people to remember him for his service, not just the political signs and flags that made his home stand out.

“I want to remember my husband, you know, how he was [a] very good man, you know, [his] service in the church, service in the army,” Garcia said.

She called him “my hero.”

Police said officers were called to Sheron’s home around 2:14 p.m. on May 20 after receiving a report that an assault had just happened.

When officers arrived, they found Sheron suffering from serious injuries. A bystander who stepped in during the incident was also hurt, according to police.

The suspect had already fled on foot.

Sheron was rushed to the hospital in critical condition. Days later, he was pronounced dead.

Police searched the neighborhood and arrested 32-year-old Thomas Caleb Butler of Escondido, who they said matched the description provided by witnesses.

Butler, who served in the Navy, was booked into the San Diego County Jail on May 21. Online jail records listed him as being held without bail on suspicion of attempted murder, elder abuse, making criminal threats and battery.

Now that Sheron has died, prosecutors are reviewing whether the charges should be amended.

“The case is in the process of being presented to the San Diego County District Attorney’s Office, which is reviewing the circumstances to determine whether charges will be amended,” police said.

Tanya Sierra, a spokesperson for the San Diego County District Attorney’s Office, told ABC News that an update on possible amended charges is expected at Butler’s next court date on June 3.

Military records provided by the Navy to ABC News show Butler enlisted in December 2011, served as an information systems technician, and was discharged in January 2023.

The San Diego County Medical Examiner is still working to determine Sheron’s official cause and manner of death.

Meanwhile, Sheron’s family and friends are grieving a man they say was much more than a political display in a front yard.

A GoFundMe campaign created to help cover funeral expenses described the attack as “brutal and unprovoked.” By Wednesday afternoon, it had raised more than $40,500.

Sheron’s friend, Jim Gillie, told KGTV that the MAGA decorations outside the home had been targeted before.

“Back in March, people came through with razor blades and cut up a bunch of Kerry’s flags,” Gillie said.

But Gillie said Sheron did not respond with rage when people disagreed with him.

“Kerry was used to it because he’d come out here with his Trump signs and stuff during the week and flags, and people would drive by and honk and wave, and most of the people are good,” Gillie said. “But when someone would flip him off, he’d just look at me and say, they have their right to freedom of speech, too.”

That detail adds a painful irony to the case.

In a country already exhausted by political division, Sheron’s death has quickly become the kind of story that invites speculation, outrage, and finger-pointing. But police have not confirmed a political motive, and the legal process is still unfolding.

What is known is that a 69-year-old veteran is dead, a bystander was injured trying to help, and a family is now planning a funeral instead of sharing another day with the man they loved.

For Sheron’s wife, the politics may be what strangers noticed first.

But it is not what she wants remembered last.
