A Florida middle school teacher has been fired after a disturbing classroom video showed what appeared to be a Black baby doll hanging from a TV monitor by a cord — an image parents say looked like a horrifying reference to America’s history of lynching.

The incident happened at Barrington Middle School in Lithia, Florida, roughly 20 to 25 miles southeast of Tampa.

The video was recorded by a 14-year-old student named Noah, who said he knew immediately that what he was seeing needed to be documented.

According to Noah, the teacher, identified as 63-year-old Karen Whitmore Savage, had taken the doll from another student after becoming frustrated that the class was not paying attention.

What happened next stunned the room.

“She took the charger cord and wrapped it around the baby’s neck and tied it,” Noah told CBS Tampa affiliate WTSP.

He said Savage then tried several times to get the cord over the classroom TV monitor. Once she succeeded, Noah said, she lowered the doll so it could be seen hanging beneath the screen.

At first, some students laughed nervously. But Noah said the mood quickly changed as classmates realized how ugly the image looked.

“Everybody started telling her it was wrong and racist to do that,” he said.

Savage allegedly responded by saying it was only a joke before taking the doll down.

But for Noah, the damage had already been done.

He said he started recording because he wanted proof.

“While she was lowering it down, I was like, I think I should record this so I have more proof that she did it,” Noah said. “I needed more evidence so that she doesn’t get away with it.”

The clip quickly exploded online, racking up hundreds of thousands of views and sparking outrage from parents, community members and social media users who demanded action from the school district.

Noah also claimed Savage followed him to the student affairs office and spoke over him while he tried to report what had happened.

His mother, Nina Williams, said she went into a panic when her son sent the video to the family group chat while he was still at school.

“My heart started racing,” Williams told WTSP. “I immediately just went into a panic. I was like, ‘Oh my God, I have to go get my son.’”

Williams said the sight of the doll hanging by the neck immediately brought to mind the country’s brutal history of racial terror.

“That is not something that I expected my children in 2026 to ever have to deal with seeing — a lynching, whether it was real or fake,” she said. “The whole image is just horrific.”

She said the incident will likely stay with the students forever.

“This is something they will never forget,” Williams said. “This will be with my son for the rest of his life.”

The outrage only grew as the video spread online. While many viewers called for Savage to be fired, others claimed the clip may have been taken out of context.

Hillsborough County Public Schools moved quickly.

The district first removed Savage from campus while officials investigated. By Wednesday, her employment had been terminated.

“Ms. Savage’s employment has been terminated, effective immediately, and the incident has been reported to the Florida Department of Education’s Office of Professional Practice Services for any action regarding her teaching certificate,” a district spokesperson told WTSP.

The district added that it does “not tolerate conduct of this nature” and said counselors and administrators would remain available for any Barrington Middle School students who needed support.

Williams said she appreciated the district’s quick action, but she believes Savage should never step foot in a classroom again.

“I do thank them for moving quickly to remove her from the school building,” she said. “I do appreciate that. And I am praying that she never gets to return to another school in any county in any state.”

Williams also said civil rights attorneys have contacted her after the video went viral, and that legal action against the school district is now being considered.
