President Donald Trump’s Cabinet was hit with another major shake-up Friday after Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard abruptly submitted her resignation, citing her husband’s battle with an extremely rare form of bone cancer.

Gabbard, one of the most unusual political figures in Trump’s orbit, told the president she will leave her post on June 30 so she can support her husband, Abraham Williams, through what she described as a difficult and deeply personal health crisis. Her resignation was reported Friday and confirmed by multiple outlets. (AP News)

In her resignation letter, Gabbard said she was “deeply grateful” for the trust Trump placed in her to lead the nation’s intelligence community. But she said she could no longer continue in one of the government’s most demanding national security jobs while her husband faces the fight of his life.

“Unfortunately, I must submit my resignation, effective June 30, 2026,” Gabbard wrote, according to the letter. “My husband, Abraham, has recently been diagnosed with an extremely rare form of bone cancer.”

She added that he faces “major challenges in the coming weeks and months,” and said she must step away from public service to stand by his side.

The personal reason for Gabbard’s departure is heartbreaking. But politically, the timing is explosive.

Her exit comes after months of tension inside Trump’s national security team, where Gabbard’s long-standing anti-interventionist views often seemed at odds with an administration that has taken a far more aggressive posture overseas, especially on Iran.

Gabbard, a former Democratic congresswoman from Hawaii and former presidential candidate, built much of her political brand around opposing “forever wars.” That made her a fascinating and controversial choice to serve as Trump’s top intelligence official. To supporters, she was an independent-minded outsider. To critics, she was a risky appointment whose views did not always line up neatly with the intelligence establishment or the hardliners surrounding Trump.

Those tensions became harder to ignore earlier this year after Gabbard testified about U.S. intelligence assessments on Iran. Reports said intelligence officials assessed that Iran was not actively building a nuclear weapon, a position Trump later publicly distanced himself from. Behind the scenes, other Trump loyalists reportedly became more central to intelligence briefings and war planning discussions, including CIA Director John Ratcliffe. The optics were hard to miss: Gabbard still had the title, but her grip on the center of power appeared to be slipping.

Trump, however, offered only praise as he confirmed her departure.

“Unfortunately, after having done a great job, Tulsi Gabbard will be leaving the Administration on June 30th,” Trump wrote, according to reports.

He said her husband had been diagnosed with a rare form of bone cancer and that Gabbard “rightfully” wanted to be with him through the battle.

“I have no doubt he will soon be better than ever,” Trump added. “Tulsi has done an incredible job, and we will miss her.”

Still, the resignation lands as another headache for a Trump administration already facing a string of high-profile Cabinet exits. Gabbard’s departure marks the fourth Cabinet-level shake-up of Trump’s second term, according to the Associated Press. (AP News)

It also marks the stunning collapse of one of the strangest alliances in modern Washington.

Gabbard began her national political career as a rising Democratic star, then became a fierce critic of the party, left it in 2022, and eventually aligned herself with Trump’s movement. Her criticism of foreign intervention and the political establishment made her popular with parts of the MAGA base. But once inside the administration, she found herself caught between Trump’s “America First” campaign rhetoric and a national security apparatus that moved sharply toward confrontation.

During her tenure, Gabbard pushed Trump-aligned priorities, including declassification efforts, intelligence community restructuring, and investigations tied to claims about political weaponization. She also helped lead efforts aimed at revisiting the so-called “Russia Hoax,” a favorite Trump grievance.

But in the end, her departure leaves the administration with another open seat, another round of political speculation, and another reminder that loyalty in Trump’s Washington does not always mean stability.

For Gabbard, the next chapter is personal, not political.

For Trump, it is one more dramatic exit from a Cabinet that has already seen plenty of turmoil.

  1. Nobody was “stunned”… we all knew she was considering it… just needed to ask Trump how long she needed to pretend to stay until he had a replacement…
