A celebrated movie composer who worked on horror films and taught the next generation of Hollywood musicians has died after collapsing on one of Southern California’s most dangerous hiking trails.

Mark Smythe, a 53-year-old composer from New Zealand known for his haunting film scores and concert music, was found unresponsive while hiking the infamous Mount Wilson Trail near Sierra Madre, California.

According to the Sierra Madre Search and Rescue Team, crews rushed to the scene on May 9 after receiving reports of a hiker in distress just north of Rescue Ridge — a rugged area notorious for brutal terrain and deadly accidents.

By the time rescuers arrived, Smythe’s friends and family were desperately performing CPR in a heartbreaking attempt to save him. Tragically, first responders said he was pronounced dead at the scene.

The shocking death has rattled the local hiking community because it marks the second fatal incident on the trail this month alone. Earlier in May, another hiker reportedly plunged to his death in the same mountain area.

Photos released by rescue crews showed emergency teams racing along dirt mountain roads as police from both Sierra Madre and Arcadia joined the grim response effort.

“Sierra Madre Search and Rescue extends our condolences to the family and friends of the deceased man,” officials said in a statement, while also thanking hikers who rushed to help before emergency crews arrived.

As news of Smythe’s sudden death spread, emotional tributes flooded social media from devastated friends, students, and colleagues in the film and music world.

“His passion for music, his dedication to his students, and his kindness left a profound mark on all of us,” one colleague from the Los Angeles College of Music wrote.

Another longtime collaborator said Smythe’s work transformed his films.

“My films became what they are because of Mark and his incredible gift for music,” the filmmaker shared online.

Smythe was widely respected in Hollywood music circles and served as chair of the Composing for Visual Media Department. His chilling score for the Hulu thriller The Reef: Stalked even earned an SCL Award nomination.

Despite the tragedy, Smythe’s family found some comfort in knowing he died doing something he truly loved.

“It is a comfort to know that he was doing one of the things he loved, hiking in the hills,” his sister, Pepe Becker, wrote in an emotional Facebook post.

Now, fans and loved ones are remembering the talented composer not only for his music — but for the kindness and generosity they say defined his life.
