Eric Swalwell’s political collapse just got even uglier.

The former California congressman, once hailed as a rising Democratic star and one of the party’s most media-savvy messengers, is now facing a fresh wave of humiliating scrutiny after new reports detailed alleged X-rated messages, nude Snapchat videos, and extramarital encounters that unfolded while he was married and serving in Congress.

According to CNN, multiple women described deeply uncomfortable interactions with Swalwell over the years, painting a picture of a politician who publicly championed women’s rights while privately engaging in behavior that former associates and critics say revealed a very different side.

Among the most explosive claims are allegations that Swalwell sent nude photos of himself and sexually explicit videos through Snapchat, including videos of himself masturbating, while pursuing women online and through private messages. One woman told CNN that what began as political or professional communication quickly turned sexual, saying his congressional content would be followed by explicit images that left her stunned.

Another reported encounter involved a young waitress in Los Angeles who allegedly received a LinkedIn message from the then-powerful lawmaker after only a brief interaction. CNN also reported that a former congressional staffer described years of private messages and hotel meetups, later showing the outlet nude images and explicit videos she said Swalwell sent her.

Swalwell’s attorney has acknowledged that he had “extramarital contact with women,” while insisting the relationships were consensual and denying allegations of assault or nonconsensual misconduct. That admission, however, has only deepened the sense of scandal surrounding a politician who built much of his brand on cable news outrage, moral certainty, and calls for accountability from others.

For many Democrats, that is where the story becomes especially toxic. This is not just about alleged infidelity or reckless personal conduct. It is about the glaring hypocrisy of a public official who positioned himself as a defender of women and progressive values while allegedly behaving in ways that, at minimum, show stunningly poor judgment and, at worst, raise serious questions about abuse of power.

The fallout has already been dramatic. After sexual misconduct allegations surfaced in April, Swalwell suspended his campaign for California governor and then resigned from Congress, ending a career that once seemed destined for bigger things. Reports last month said donors were scrambling to get their money back as his campaign imploded under the weight of the accusations.

There are also growing questions about money.

Campaign records reportedly showed Swalwell spent heavily on hotels, travel, and other expenses during his years in office, raising concerns about whether campaign funds may have been used in ways that deserve closer scrutiny. Donors and watchdogs have increasingly questioned whether any political money was tied to conduct that had nothing to do with public service and everything to do with private indulgence.

The personal damage is now impossible to hide. Swalwell has been married to Brittany Watts since 2016, and the couple shares three children. While he has kept a low profile since the allegations became public, the scandal has spilled far beyond Washington and Sacramento, dragging his family into a spectacle that grows more sordid with each new detail.

What makes the story especially devastating for Democrats is that it lands at a moment when the party continues to argue that character, decency, and respect for women matter in public life. Swalwell’s downfall now threatens to become a cautionary tale about what happens when a politician’s private conduct crashes headfirst into the values he claimed to represent.

And the questions are not going away anytime soon.

Even after resigning, reports say Swalwell continued contacting women through Snapchat, suggesting that the behavior at the center of the scandal may not have stopped even as his political world was burning down around him. If more evidence or more accusers emerge, this already ugly story could become even more politically radioactive.

For a politician who built a career attacking corruption and presenting himself as one of the Democrats’ sharpest voices, the final image may be impossible to erase: not a reformer, not a future governor, but another powerful man brought down by the gap between what he preached and what he allegedly did in private.

  1. None of these revelations are new to me or many in the FBI. I did 25 years with the Bureau and the nation would be shocked to discover the truth about many of our so-called political leaders. Swalwell should have been indicted and booted from Congress years ago.
