A routine school drop-off turned into a nightmare that no one saw coming — and now it’s ended in tragedy.
Police in Hammond say a father who was allegedly shot by his own 13-year-old son earlier this week has died from his injuries, sending shockwaves through the community.
According to the Hammond Police Department, the disturbing incident unfolded Tuesday morning outside the Tangipahoa Alternative Programs campus during a typical carpool line. Investigators say the teen refused to get out of the vehicle — and what happened next escalated into violence.
Authorities allege the boy pulled out a handgun and shot his father while they were still in the drop-off line.
In the chaotic moments that followed, the vehicle lurched forward, crashing straight into a nearby home and plowing into the living room. Miraculously, no one inside the house was hurt.
Even more chilling, a younger child — believed to be just 5 or 6 years old — was sitting in the back seat during the shooting. That child was not physically injured.
Police say the teen then got out of the car and approached a school resource officer with the weapon. He was taken into custody at the scene without further incident.
The father was rushed to the hospital in critical condition, but despite efforts to save him, he died days later on Saturday.
The 13-year-old had initially been charged with attempted second-degree murder. Now, officials say those charges are expected to be upgraded to second-degree murder as the investigation continues.
The teen is currently being held at the Florida Parishes Juvenile Center.
As investigators work to piece together what led up to the shocking moment, the case is raising difficult questions about youth violence, access to firearms, and what can push a situation from tense to deadly in a matter of seconds.
