A routine Saturday night near the University of Iowa spiraled into pure chaos when a massive street brawl suddenly turned into a shooting that left at least three students injured early Sunday morning.

According to the Iowa City Police Department, officers were called to the popular Pedestrian Mall area around 1:45 a.m. after reports of a large fight breaking out. But as police arrived, the situation escalated instantly — gunshots rang out, sending crowds into a full-blown panic.

Wild videos circulating online show dozens of people packed into the street, throwing punches in a violent free-for-all. Within seconds, the scene shifts from fists flying to sheer terror, with partygoers sprinting for their lives as shots echo through the night.

“At this time, multiple victims have been taken to area hospitals,” police said, confirming several people were struck during the gunfire.

University President Barb Wilson later revealed that three of the victims are students, calling the incident “heartbreaking” in a message sent to the campus community.

The university quickly issued an emergency “Hawk Alert,” warning students to avoid the area near East College Street and Clinton Street as first responders flooded the scene. The popular nightlife strip — typically packed with students — sits just about a mile from campus, making the violence hit especially close to home.

As of Sunday morning, no arrests had been made, and the condition of the victims remains unclear.

Investigators are now scrambling to piece together exactly what sparked the violent chain reaction, urging anyone with videos or information to come forward. Iowa City Area Crime Stoppers is offering a $1,000 reward for tips leading to an arrest.

What started as a late-night crowd quickly turned into a nightmare — and now, an entire campus is left waiting for answers.
