What began as a bitter divorce appears to have ended in an unspeakable tragedy.

Former Virginia Lt. Gov. Justin Fairfax fatally shot his wife, Dr. Cerina Fairfax, inside their Annandale home before taking his own life, according to police, in a case authorities say was tied to a deeply troubled and “messy” split. The shooting unfolded around midnight, with the couple’s two teenage children inside the house at the time. Their oldest son was the one who called 911.

Fairfax County Police Chief Kevin Davis told reporters that investigators believe the violence was connected to an ongoing domestic dispute surrounding the couple’s divorce. According to police, Justin Fairfax had recently been served paperwork related to an upcoming court proceeding, something authorities say may have triggered the fatal events that followed.

Even though the couple had separated, they were still living under the same roof, a detail that now adds another layer of heartbreak to an already horrifying story. Davis called it a deeply traumatic event for the children, who not only lost both parents in a single night, but were home while it happened.

Police also revealed that officers had previously responded to a domestic call at the Fairfax home back in January, though no charges were filed at the time. Investigators say Dr. Cerina Fairfax had installed several cameras throughout the house before that earlier incident, and that the footage captured evidence tied to what happened this week. Davis said that same camera footage had also helped police determine that Justin Fairfax’s earlier claim that his wife assaulted him was not supported by evidence.

The couple had been married for 19 years and first met while attending Duke University. Dr. Cerina Fairfax was a respected dentist with a private practice in Fairfax, Virginia, and was known for her commitment to community outreach, charitable work, and helping those in need. Her professional biography described someone devoted not just to her patients, but to service beyond her office walls.

Justin Fairfax, once seen as one of Virginia’s rising Democratic stars, served as lieutenant governor from 2018 to 2022 and made history as only the second Black American to hold the office in the state. But his political career was later overshadowed by sexual misconduct allegations from two women during his time in office. Fairfax denied those allegations, was never criminally charged, and remained in office until his term ended. Still, the accusations sparked outrage across the Democratic Party, with several prominent Virginia Democrats, including Sen. Tim Kaine, calling on him to resign.

He later ran for governor in 2021, but his campaign failed in the Democratic primary, marking a steep decline from the promise that once surrounded his political future.

Now, what remains is a shattered family, two children left to carry unimaginable grief, and a case that police say is still under active investigation. Chief Davis summed it up bluntly, calling it a devastating collapse for a high-profile family that once appeared to have everything going for it.
