Rep. Eric Swalwell is facing a fresh wave of scrutiny after a new rape allegation surfaced Tuesday, prompting the California Democrat to issue a forceful denial through his attorney and blast the accusations as a coordinated attempt to take him down.
In a sharply worded statement released just hours after the latest claim became public, Swalwell said he “categorically and unequivocally” denies every allegation of sexual misconduct and assault made against him. He described the accusations as “false, fabricated, and deeply offensive,” and insisted the growing controversy is not about truth or justice, but about destroying his name and career.
The updated response came after an explosive press conference in Beverly Hills, where former model Lonna Drewes publicly accused Swalwell of raping her during an encounter in West Hollywood in 2018. Drewes alleged that what began as a seemingly professional relationship turned into something traumatic and life-altering.
According to Drewes, she believed Swalwell was interested in helping her fashion software company through political and business connections. She said the two had interacted on multiple occasions, including at public events, before a third meeting that she claims ended in violence.
Speaking through tears, Drewes alleged that Swalwell invited her to accompany him before a political event, then told her he needed to retrieve paperwork from his hotel room. She claimed that by the time she arrived, she felt incapacitated after having just one glass of wine and was unable to physically resist. Drewes alleged that Swalwell raped and choked her, causing her to lose consciousness.
She said she did not undergo a rape kit at the time, but told people close to her what happened and documented the incident in a handwritten calendar. She also said the alleged assault and its aftermath were later discussed during therapy sessions at a sexual assault center in Connecticut.
Drewes described the emotional fallout as devastating, saying the experience severely damaged her mental health and pushed her into a dark spiral. She said fear kept her silent for years, especially because of Swalwell’s political stature, his legal background, and his family’s ties to law enforcement. Now, she says, she plans to report her allegations to authorities.
Swalwell, meanwhile, is digging in for a legal fight. In the statement issued by attorney Sara Azari, his team argued that the timing and rollout of the accusations point to a deliberate political campaign. The congressman’s camp said he has spent two decades in public service defending civil liberties and standing up to abuses of power, and vowed he will fight the allegations with “tenacity, courage, and conviction.”
Azari, a high-profile attorney known for appearances on major cable news networks, also made clear that Swalwell will not be speaking directly to the press at this stage. When asked whether the congressman would personally address the claims, the answer from his team was a blunt no.
The stakes are now rising fast for one of the most visible Democrats in Congress. Swalwell has already been accused by multiple women of sexual misconduct and assault, with two women now alleging rape. The latest accusation only deepens the crisis surrounding the congressman as the controversy moves from political scandal territory into something far more serious.
For Democrats, the situation is especially combustible. The party has long argued that allegations of sexual violence must be treated with seriousness, consistency, and accountability no matter who is accused. That reality now puts Swalwell under an even harsher spotlight as more women come forward and calls for answers grow louder.
At this point, the allegations remain claims, and Swalwell has denied them in full. But with a new accuser stepping forward publicly, legal threats flying, and law enforcement reports expected, this scandal appears far from over.
