Shocking Discovery as Boy, 9, Found Locked in Van for Over a Year

A horrifying child abuse case out of eastern France is leaving people stunned after authorities say a 9-year-old boy was found locked inside his father’s utility van, malnourished, unable to walk, and surrounded by trash and human waste after allegedly being kept there since late 2024.

The disturbing discovery happened Monday in the village of Hagenbach, near the borders of Switzerland and Germany, after a neighbor reported hearing what sounded like a child coming from the vehicle. When police forced the van open, they found a scene that prosecutors described as deeply alarming.

According to local prosecutor Nicolas Heitz, the boy was discovered naked, curled up in a fetal position under a blanket, lying on top of a pile of garbage and near excrement. Authorities said he was clearly malnourished and had been kept in such a confined seated position for so long that he could no longer walk.

The child was rushed to a hospital for treatment, while his father was taken into custody.

Investigators say the father told police he locked the boy inside the van in November 2024 because he wanted to “protect him” from his partner, who he claimed wanted to send the child to a psychiatric hospital. But prosecutors say there is no known medical record showing the boy had psychiatric issues before he vanished. In fact, officials said he had been doing well in school and earning good grades.

In one of the most heartbreaking details to emerge so far, the boy reportedly told investigators he believed his father “had no choice” but to shut him away because of ongoing conflict with the father’s partner. He also said he had not showered since 2024.

The father is now facing preliminary kidnapping and other charges and remains in custody. His partner denied knowing the boy was being held in the van, but she was still handed preliminary charges, including failure to assist a minor in danger. She has been released under judicial supervision.

The case is now raising painful questions about how a child could disappear for so long without authorities, relatives, neighbors, or school officials discovering the truth. Friends and family reportedly told investigators they believed the boy had been placed in a psychiatric institution, while teachers were told he had transferred to another school.

Officials are also investigating whether other people knew about the child’s confinement and failed to act.

Meanwhile, the boy’s 12-year-old sister and the 10-year-old daughter of the father’s partner have been placed in the care of social services.

Residents in Hagenbach have expressed shock over the case, saying they had no idea what was allegedly happening behind closed doors. Authorities have not released the names of the boy or his relatives as the investigation continues.
