A fresh political storm is brewing inside the Vatican — and this time, it has the Trump administration fuming.

Pope Leo XIV reportedly sat down with longtime Democratic strategist David Axelrod just one day after a stunning report claimed top Pentagon officials had tried to strong-arm the Vatican over the pontiff’s criticism of President Donald Trump’s war rhetoric.

According to The Free Press, Elbridge Colby, the undersecretary of defense for policy and a prominent Catholic voice inside the Trump administration, called in Cardinal Christophe Pierre back in January for what was described as a tense and deeply unsettling meeting. During that conversation, Colby allegedly warned that the U.S. military could do “whatever it wants” and suggested the American-born pope had better “take its side.”

The report painted the exchange as more than just diplomatic frustration. At one point, a U.S. official reportedly invoked the Avignon Papacy — that dark chapter in church history when political power and military force were used to dominate the papacy — in what critics are likely to see as an astonishingly aggressive message to the Vatican.

Then came Leo’s next move.

The day after that report dropped, the 70-year-old pontiff met with Axelrod at the Vatican, according to church officials. The private audience reportedly ran so long that Leo was delayed by about 30 minutes for his next scheduled engagement with leaders from the Italian Winter Olympic and Paralympic committees.

The optics were impossible to miss.

Axelrod, who helped shape Barack Obama’s political rise, has deep ties to Chicago — the same city where Leo was born and raised before becoming the first American pope in history. After Leo’s election last year, Axelrod openly celebrated the moment online, marveling that the new pontiff was not only American, but from Chicago.

Their shared hometown connection may be personal, but the political backdrop surrounding the meeting made it feel far bigger than a casual conversation.

Axelrod recently amplified some of Leo’s sharpest public remarks on war, including the pope’s warning to journalists to show the suffering war inflicts on ordinary people and not reduce it to spectacle. The message landed hard at a moment when Trump allies were reportedly boasting online about “banger memes” built from real strike footage and imagery lifted from films and video games.

Leo has not exactly been subtle in his condemnation of the administration’s posture.

After Trump reportedly warned this week that “a whole civilization will die tonight” if Iran failed to reopen the Strait of Hormuz within 12 hours, Leo blasted the war as “unjust” and called the president’s remarks “truly unacceptable.”

“People want peace,” the pope said, urging citizens in every country involved to pressure political leaders and lawmakers to reject war.

That rebuke only deepened the divide between the Vatican and Trumpworld.

Leo also met Thursday with Archbishop Gabriele Giordano Caccia, who recently replaced Pierre as the Vatican’s top diplomat to the United States. Pierre stepped down after reaching the church’s mandatory retirement age, but his reported clash with Pentagon officials continues to cast a long shadow.

So far, the Vatican has not publicly revealed what Leo discussed with either Axelrod or Caccia. But one thing is clear: despite pressure from Washington, the pope has shown no sign of softening his stance.

In fact, the tension appears to be growing.

Leo has already declined an invitation from the White House to visit the United States for America’s 250th birthday celebration this summer. According to The Free Press, he may avoid returning to his home country altogether while Trump remains in power — a striking possibility for the first American pontiff.

The Pentagon, for its part, is pushing back hard on the reporting. A Defense Department spokesperson insisted the meeting with Pierre was “respectful and reasonable,” while also claiming the account of the conversation had been “highly exaggerated and distorted.”

Still, the image now emerging is politically combustible: an American pope openly condemning war, a Trump administration accused of trying to bully the Vatican into line, and a high-profile meeting with one of the Democratic Party’s most recognizable strategists right in the middle of it all.

For a White House already under fire over its handling of global conflict, Leo’s refusal to fall in step may be the last thing Trump wanted — and the clearest sign yet that this pope has no intention of becoming a prop for anyone’s agenda.

  5. Leo is not good for the Catholic Church. He is way too political. His job is to handle religious matters not government issues. As a Catholic I am disappointed.
