Author and longtime journalist Brian Doherty has died after a presumed fall at a historic park in Northern California. He was 57.

Doherty, a senior editor at Reason Magazine, was found last week at Battery Yates, a scenic but rugged landmark overlooking the San Francisco Bay in Sausalito, Marin County.

Reports say he had been attending an art gathering Thursday night held on top of the park’s old concrete military structures. Authorities believe he may have fallen sometime after the event.

Doherty was widely respected for his deep work on libertarian thought, especially his 2008 book Radicals for Capitalism, which traced the roots and rise of the modern libertarian movement in America.

Friends and colleagues are now remembering him as a one-of-a-kind voice. David Nott described Doherty as the movement’s go-to historian, someone who could bring its personalities and stories to life like few others.

Born in Brooklyn, Doherty later grew up in Florida before moving to California in the 1990s, where he became deeply involved in the underground art scene. He was inspired by the Cacophony Society, a loose network of artists and pranksters that helped spark cultural phenomena like Burning Man and SantaCon.

That influence led him to write This Is Burning Man: The Rise of a New American Underground, further cementing his reputation as a cultural chronicler.

“Brian’s contributions to the art scenes in L.A. and San Francisco were monumental,” activist and author Chicken John Rinaldi said. “His passing leaves so many people and so many systems impoverished.”

According to colleagues, Doherty had mobility issues and used a cane, which may have played a role in the tragic fall.

Over the years, his writing appeared in major outlets including The Washington Post, The Wall Street Journal, The Los Angeles Times, National Review, Spin, and The San Francisco Chronicle.
