A California couple says they were left “fearing for our lives” after allegedly catching their roommate on camera wearing a gas mask and spraying a mysterious substance all over their food.

The disturbing incident unfolded inside a shared home in Santa Clarita, where Billy and Davidson Hopper say they began feeling sick for months — without knowing why.

According to the couple, their suspicions grew after repeated unexplained health issues, including emergency room visits. Davidson told Fox LA that doctors found signs of liver damage and even suggested the blood work pointed to possible poisoning.

“Back in October, my wife had to go to the E.R.,” he said. “They ran all kinds of tests… there’s definitely something wrong with your liver, and based on the blood work, it seems like poisoning.”

Trying to figure out what was happening, the couple reviewed hours of footage from a kitchen security camera. What they claim they saw shocked them.

The video allegedly shows their unnamed roommate wearing a gas mask while spraying groceries — including fruit, vegetables, canned goods, cereal, spices, and even their coffee pot.

“He was spraying stuff all over our groceries,” Billy said. “Our whole pantry. Everything.”

The couple also claim the roommate appeared to hide the container after using it, as if trying to conceal what he was doing.

Police had previously responded to the residence twice in the last six months for reported food poisoning incidents. But after seeing the new footage, the Hoppers contacted authorities again.

On Tuesday, officers with the Santa Clarita Sheriff’s Station responded to the home, and the situation escalated into an hours-long standoff. Authorities reportedly believed the suspect may have been experiencing a mental health crisis.

Eventually, the man exited the house and was taken into custody.

Following the arrest, the Hoppers also accused the roommate of theft and property damage.

“We’ve been in fear for our lives,” Billy said. “We don’t want to be in fear anymore. We’re tired of it. We just want to be safe.”

Police sought a search warrant for the home as the investigation continued. The suspect was later released on a notice to appear in court.

For now, the couple says they are focused on their health — and on moving forward after what they describe as months of confusion, illness, and fear inside their own home.
