Bill Clinton Issues Dark Warning About Trump After Deadly Shootings

Former President Bill Clinton issued one of his sharpest warnings yet about President Donald Trump’s second-term immigration crackdown, saying the nation is entering a “dangerous moment” after two fatal shootings by federal agents in Minneapolis.

Clinton, now 79, said he felt “compelled” to speak after the killing of ICU nurse Alex Pretti, a 37-year-old Minnesota VA nurse shot by Border Patrol agents during what officials described as an “enforcement sweep.” It was the second deadly incident in the city this month.

“We face only a few moments where the decisions we make will shape our history for years to come,” Clinton wrote in a statement shared online. “This is one of them.”

His warning was blunt. “If we give our freedoms away after 250 years, we might never get them back.”

The killing of Pretti came just two weeks after Renee Nicole Good, also 37, was shot during a protest against Trump’s expanded immigration raids. Both deaths sparked demonstrations across the country. In Los Angeles, mourners held candles in front of hand-drawn signs reading the victims’ names. One attendee described the moment as “the kind of thing we never thought we’d see happen in America.”

Local officials say they have received limited information from federal authorities. One Minneapolis city council member, who requested anonymity out of fear of retaliation, told us: “We’re being stonewalled. We’re not even sure who is giving the orders anymore.”

Clinton never mentions Trump or Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem by name. But the implication is unmistakable.

“The people in charge are lying to the public,” he wrote. “They are telling Americans not to trust their own eyes.”

He accused the administration of blocking local investigations and deploying forces that operate “without transparency, accountability, or restraint.”

A longtime Clinton adviser, speaking privately, said the former president had been tracking the raids for weeks. “He thinks we’re watching federal power stretch far beyond what it was designed to do,” the adviser said. “He told me, ‘This feels like something we studied in history books, not something that happens under our flag.’”

The Department of Homeland Security, created after 9/11 as a multi-agency hub focused on counterterrorism and disaster response, has shifted dramatically under Trump’s second term. A former DHS official who previously worked with Noem said the department is now “almost exclusively focused” on immigration enforcement.

“DHS has become an immigration department, and that’s not what it was founded for,” the former official told us. “Some conservatives warned about mission creep years ago. Now mission creep is the mission.”

According to internal assessments reviewed by multiple news outlets this month, ICE and Border Patrol teams are being pushed deeper into major cities. Agents have entered private homes without warrants, fired tear gas into crowds, and detained U.S. citizens alongside undocumented residents during mass sweeps.

“It feels like a federal police force looking for enemies, not a security agency protecting Americans,” a Minneapolis public defender said. “We’re seeing open fear in the neighborhoods.”

Civil rights groups say the pattern mirrors the chaotic federal response to racial-justice protests during Trump’s first term, when DHS officers in unmarked uniforms pulled protesters into unmarked vans in Portland.

“We are reliving a darker version of 2020,” said Aisha Bennett, director of the Liberty and Justice Foundation. “Only this time the tactics are more aggressive and the leadership is less restrained.”

Clinton’s statement referenced those earlier concerns. “We’ve watched scenes play out across Minneapolis and other communities that I never believed would take place in America,” he wrote.

The former president closed his message with a call for civic defiance.

“This is a moment for every person who believes in the promise of American democracy to stand up, speak out, and show that we still belong to We the People,” he said.

Within hours, his statement had been viewed nearly six million times online.

The White House, DHS, ICE, and Clinton’s office did not respond to requests for comment.
