Senate Majority Leader Chris Garten is under fire after sharing AI-generated images showing himself attacking Santa Claus outside the Indiana State Capitol. The Christmas Day post quickly went viral, drawing both laughter and fury across political lines.
In one image, Garten appears to kick Santa. In another, he’s seen punching the holiday icon into the ground as smiling onlookers wave “Garten for Indiana” signs.
“When you find out the North Pole is trying to bring more bureaucratic overreach & unfunded mandates down the chimney disguised as ‘Christmas cheer.’ Not on my watch,” Garten wrote. “We The People run Indiana, not the bureaucrats.”
The senator said he made the images with his kids “for fun.” But many Hoosiers weren’t amused.
The Indiana Democratic Party slammed the post as “pretty weird,” adding, “It’s bizarre to step away from your kids on Christmas morning to post AI slop of yourself beating up Santa. The Republicans running our state are not serious people.”
Political commentator Keith Olbermann mocked it as “War on Christmas, Indiana GOP style.”
Another response from Democrat George Hornedo simply read: “This is weird lol.”
Even international observers weighed in. Alexander Clarkson, a lecturer at King’s College London, posted: “The leadership of the American Right is now too online in politically self-destructive ways. MAGA elites are too weak to build something lasting but strong enough to cause lasting chaos.”
After the backlash, Garten didn’t apologize. Instead, he doubled down in another post.
“Lots of intolerance, swearing, and outrage on display over a few AI pics I had a blast designing with my kids,” he wrote. “Some of you clowns are just insufferable. Hopefully your negativity stays in the comments and not directed at your families. Merry Christmas, snowflakes!”
His defiance only fueled more debate — with supporters calling critics “humorless” and opponents accusing the senator of turning Christmas into a political stunt.
The controversy comes as Indiana Republicans prepare for a tense legislative session, following failed attempts to redraw state district maps to strengthen GOP control.
Political analysts say Garten’s stunt reflects a growing trend of conservative politicians using social media provocations to rally online followers.
“It’s performance politics,” said one Indianapolis-based political consultant. “Posts like this aren’t about policy — they’re about engagement, outrage, and identity.”
Whether Garten’s AI Santa smackdown helps or hurts his image remains to be seen. But one thing is clear — he’s not backing down from the Christmas chaos he created.
