Amanda Seyfried isn’t backing down — not even after sparking a social media firestorm over comments she made about conservative activist Charlie Kirk following his shocking murder this fall.
The Mean Girls and Mamma Mia! star, 40, is standing by her controversial claim that Kirk was “hateful,” insisting she was “just telling the truth.”
Shortly after Kirk was fatally shot on September 10 during a Turning Point USA college tour stop, Seyfried replied to a viral Instagram post that revisited Kirk’s history of inflammatory statements on race, abortion, and immigration.
“He was hateful,” she wrote — a remark that instantly drew fury from Kirk’s supporters.
Days later, she shared a repost connecting Kirk’s defense of gun rights to the circumstances of his own killing. “You can’t invite violence to the dinner table and be shocked when it starts eating,” read the quote she endorsed.
Online, conservatives accused her of celebrating Kirk’s death. Boycott campaigns against her films quickly began trending.
Now, while promoting her new film The Testament of Ann Lee, Seyfried is defiantly standing her ground.
“I’m not f—ing apologizing for that,” she told Who What Wear on Wednesday. “I said something that was based on actual reality — footage, quotes, facts. I’m free to have an opinion.”
Seyfried said the blowback reminded her “how quickly people twist things.” She added, “I was able to give some clarity later, but it was about getting my voice back. It had been stolen and recontextualized — that’s what people do.”
In a follow-up Instagram post on September 18, Seyfried tried to add context to her comment, writing that she didn’t want to “add fuel to a fire” but felt her words had been “irresponsibly” taken out of context.
“I can get angry about misogyny and racist rhetoric and ALSO agree that Charlie Kirk’s murder was absolutely disturbing and deplorable in every way imaginable,” she wrote. “No one should have to experience this level of violence. This country is grieving too many senseless deaths. Can we agree on that at least?”
Kirk, 31, was gunned down in Phoenix at a Turning Point USA town hall event attended by hundreds of students. Police arrested 22-year-old Tyler Robinson, who allegedly carved anti-fascist slogans into his rifle’s bullet casings. Investigators described the killing as “politically motivated.”
Kirk, a polarizing figure in American conservative circles, founded Turning Point USA in 2012 and became one of President Trump’s most visible youth allies. His death sent shockwaves through the MAGA movement and fueled debates about political extremism.
Seyfried isn’t the only celebrity dragged into the controversy.
Broadway legend Kristin Chenoweth was also slammed after writing “Didn’t always agree but appreciated some perspectives” under Kirk’s final Instagram post. She followed up by calling the shooting a “senseless, disgusting act” and offering “prayers for the Kirk family.”
But the Wicked star faced her own wave of outrage, particularly from LGBTQ fans angered by any show of sympathy toward Kirk, who had publicly opposed same-sex marriage.
“I saw what happened online with my own eyes,” Chenoweth told Spectrum News NY1. “I came to understand my comment hurt some folks — and that hurt me so bad. I would never.”
By November, she admitted the episode “nearly broke me,” adding, “You probably know my heart, so you probably know.”
Neither Seyfried nor her representatives have responded to further requests for comment. Turning Point USA also declined to address her remarks directly.
Still, Seyfried seems unfazed by the backlash. “People will always find a way to be offended,” she said, “but I’m not going to silence myself because of that.”

This woman lacks any understanding of reality or nuance. Kirk would pose questions that opened dialogue with anyone willing to step up to the microphone and debate. Many of those willing to take up his challenge walked away convinced by the truth and had to agree with Kirk. Human nature is human nature and facts are facts. Kirk was correct on every issue he explored in his presentations and debates. Our nation has been in steep decline for decades because the people living here refuse to recognize the truth and they vote for feckless lying Democrats. Simple question: Islamic ideology is practically solely responsible for worldwide terror. After this hateful ideology began its long series of attacks on our nation our government allowed millions of people who align themselves with this ideology to immigrate to our country. Every major problem causing our decline is obvious with obvious solutions. What does our government do, each year these problems get worse. Along comes Trump who does what he can to reverse those problems and Democrats mobilize violent forces that always culminate in death of citizens. The 20 year old National Guard woman is just another result of Democrats foaming at the mouth over real solutions. There used to be Democrats worthy of support that they no longer exist. If there was justice in America not a single Democrat would hold office.
