Former President Joe Biden sparked headlines Friday night after appearing at a Nebraska Democratic Party event with a fresh bandage on his head — and delivering an emotional speech that mixed grief, personal health revelations, and sharp criticism of Donald Trump.

Speaking at the Ben Nelson Gala in Omaha, the 82-year-old former president reflected on the loss of his son Beau Biden, calling him “the one who should’ve been president, not me.” Beau, who served as Delaware’s attorney general, died in 2015 from brain cancer after serving in Iraq.

“When the love of my life, my oldest son — the attorney general of Delaware, who should’ve been president, not me — volunteered to go to Iraq for a year, he came back with stage four glioblastoma because he lived near burn pits,” Biden said softly to a hushed crowd. “And he died.”

Biden, who revealed earlier this year that he’s battling stage four prostate cancer, went on to connect his family’s experience to his administration’s past efforts on cancer research — and accused Trump and Republicans of cutting back on funding.

“Folks, I know what cancer research means. Cancer hits every family. It’s hit mine hard,” Biden said. “Trump and his Republican friends are cutting government funding for health care, making it more expensive for everyone.”

He also spoke about his own ongoing treatment, sharing that he recently finished a round of cancer care. “When you finish that round of treatment, you get to ring that bell,” he told the audience. “Thank God for the doctors, nurses, and incredible breakthroughs we’re making in cancer research.”

Biden, who will turn 83 later this month, appeared with a small bandage on the upper-left side of his head. The reason for it remains unclear, though he previously underwent Mohs surgery in August to remove skin cancer from another part of his scalp.

As his speech continued, Biden’s tone shifted from somber to fiery as he blasted Trump over the ongoing government shutdown, raising his voice as he accused Republicans of worsening hunger and inequality.

“We have a president who is deliberately making hunger worse for Americans,” he said, referring to the funding lapse affecting the SNAP food assistance program. “In the United States of America, one in five children goes to bed hungry every night! That’s not just a ‘boo’ — it’s a disgrace!”

Despite the tension, Biden ended on a hopeful note, celebrating Democrats’ strong performance in recent state elections. “The Democratic Party is back — not hyperbole,” he said to cheers. “The results in Virginia, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, California, New York, Georgia, and even Mississippi show that voters are sending a message to Trump and his crowd.”

The former president’s speech, raw and impassioned, offered a glimpse into his physical and emotional resilience as he faces personal health struggles and continues to weigh in on the nation’s political battles.
