The drama surrounding Fort Lauderdale Mayor Dean Trantalis has exploded into public view after a shocking domestic violence case landed in Broward County court this week.
According to court testimony, Trantalis, 72, claims his much-younger ex-boyfriend, Daniel Curran, 34, viciously attacked him outside his pastel-pink $1 million home — a property that’s become a local landmark for its bright color and beachside flair.
Curran has been arrested and charged with battery on a person over 65 and violation of a domestic violence injunction. He was released on a $6,000 bond and ordered to stay away from the mayor.
Speaking via video link during Wednesday’s hearing, Mayor Trantalis — a longtime Democrat and one of Florida’s most prominent openly gay politicians — told the judge that what began as a rekindled friendship turned into a violent nightmare.
“At the end, this past weekend, he threw me to the ground,” Trantalis testified. “He committed everything that’s in the information with regard to the violent act against me, and then I realized that there was no hope for this relationship.”
The mayor said he’d recently tried to help his former partner get back on track. “I wanted to rehabilitate Danny,” he said. “Hopefully steer him into counseling and mental health treatment. And I failed at that.”
Police reports show the pair began dating in March and had lived together for a time. Their on-and-off relationship became strained over the summer, leading Trantalis to file a restraining order — one Curran allegedly violated this month.
Investigators said the incident took place on Saturday night outside the mayor’s pink mansion. Curran allegedly pushed Trantalis “with both hands,” then grabbed the mayor’s leg and dragged him roughly 15 feet across the pavement.
Trantalis suffered injuries to his wrist, knee, and leg, according to Local 10 News.
Curran, who styles himself “Danny Trantalis” on Instagram, has long presented himself online as the mayor’s partner — even referring to himself as “the first gentleman of Fort Lauderdale.”
His social media shows a glamorous life alongside Trantalis, with photos from luxury trips to Paris and local events like the Fort Lauderdale Boat Show.
Just three days before the alleged attack, Curran posted smiling selfies with the mayor, writing that they had “grilled chicken and cooked some pasta for a relaxing dinner together.”
The Broward County District Attorney’s Office has already requested that the case be moved to another jurisdiction, citing Trantalis’ position as mayor.
Curran, described in his online bio as an “artist, creator, Catholic, knight, and ambassador,” has not yet commented publicly.
Trantalis, meanwhile, has faced the public with a tone of weary resignation. “This is a very complicated situation,” he told the judge. “But I know now I cannot fix him.”
The case adds a deeply personal twist to the career of a mayor already known for his outspoken advocacy on LGBTQ+ rights and community reform — and for his distinctive home that locals call the “bubblegum pink mansion.”
