A childcare worker in New South Wales, Australia, has been convicted for severely injuring a 4-year-old in a shocking August incident.

The 24-year-old woman, whose name has not been released, was arrested on September 16 and charged with assaulting a child, according to New South Wales police. She later pleaded guilty to recklessly wounding the young victim, ABC.net.au reported.

Police investigations revealed that the incident occurred in the city of Bathurst when the worker attempted to put the child down for a midday rest. The boy, resisting, was forced onto a bed, striking his head against the bed’s corner and sustaining a 2-centimeter laceration.

Investigators said the woman held the child’s arms and pushed him down with enough force to cause significant bleeding. Shockingly, she restrained the boy for 53 seconds without realizing the severity of the injury, which required medical attention and “gluing” to treat the laceration.

The child was not taken to the hospital until his father arrived to pick him up. Authorities confirmed that the worker was terminated immediately following the incident and arrested a month later.

She is scheduled to be sentenced at a later date.
