A North Carolina father is behind bars after allegedly calling 911 to confess to murdering his four children and hiding their bodies in his car.
Authorities say 38-year-old Wellington Delano Dickens III admitted during a chilling call on Monday that he killed his three young children—ages 6, 9, and 10—along with his 18-year-old stepchild.
The Johnston County Sheriff’s Office said deputies rushed to Dickens’ home in Zebulon, where they found his 3-year-old son alive inside the house.
“Mr. Dickens stated to deputies his 3-year-old son was inside the house alive, and four of his other children were deceased inside the trunk of a vehicle in the garage of the residence,” officials said in a statement.
Deputies soon discovered the bodies inside the vehicle. Authorities believe the remains may have been there for some time, though it’s unclear how long ago the killings occurred or whether the victims had been reported missing.
Dickens has been charged with one count of murder so far, though investigators expect additional charges as the case develops. He is currently being held without bond in Johnston County Jail and is scheduled to appear in court Tuesday afternoon.
Neighbors reported seeing a heavy police presence outside Dickens’ property as investigators processed the gruesome scene.
The sheriff’s office said the investigation remains ongoing.
