A Delaware school bus driver was killed Thursday morning in a heartbreaking accident outside a Newark middle school, after being struck by another bus in what police are calling a tragic and unusual crash.

The deadly incident unfolded just after morning drop-off at Gauger-Cobbs Middle School on Gender Road. According to Delaware State Police, one bus was parked in the school’s drop-off lane while the driver — a 54-year-old woman from Wilmington — stood behind her vehicle preparing for a routine emergency evacuation drill.

That’s when tragedy struck.

A second bus, parked directly behind the first, suddenly began to roll forward. The driver of the first bus was hit and thrown to the ground, police said.

Firefighters and emergency crews rushed to the scene within minutes and found the woman unresponsive. She went into cardiac arrest at the scene before being transported to a nearby hospital, where she was pronounced dead.

Authorities have not yet released her name.

The second driver — a 53-year-old woman from New Castle — was not injured in the crash.

Incredibly, both buses were carrying a combined 48 students, and none of the children were hurt, according to officials.

Police and emergency responders described the scene as chaotic but under control, with first responders keeping students calm while treating the injured driver.

“This appears to be a tragic accident,” a law enforcement source told local reporters. “The students were safe, but unfortunately, the driver didn’t make it.”

The Delaware State Police Collision Reconstruction Unit spent hours combing the parking lot for evidence. The area remained closed for roughly four hours as investigators documented the scene and cleared the vehicles.

No charges have been filed as of Thursday evening.

Parents and teachers at Gauger-Cobbs described the loss as “heartbreaking” — saying the victim was a familiar, friendly face who had driven buses in the district for years.

“This is every parent’s and every driver’s worst nightmare,” one Newark resident told Delaware Online. “She was just doing her job — making sure kids were safe.”

The Christina School District has not yet issued an official statement, but grief counselors are reportedly being made available for staff and students affected by the tragedy.
