Retired TV legend Bryant Gumbel has reportedly been rushed to the hospital after suffering a “medical emergency,” according to TMZ.

Sources told the outlet that the 77-year-old former Today co-host was taken from his Manhattan apartment building to a nearby hospital on Monday evening and remains under medical care as of Tuesday afternoon.

A family member told TMZ that Gumbel is “okay,” though they didn’t share details about his condition or what caused the sudden scare.

Gumbel is one of the most recognizable faces in broadcast history, having launched his career in 1972 as a sportscaster for KNBC-TV in Los Angeles. He spent nearly 25 years with NBC, including 15 years as co-anchor of Today, before moving to CBS to host Public Eye and The Early Show.

The veteran journalist also earned acclaim for his long-running HBO series Real Sports with Bryant Gumbel, which aired from 1995 until his retirement in 2023. His groundbreaking work earned him the Sports Emmy Lifetime Achievement Award — the first Black journalist to ever receive the honor.

Tragically, Gumbel’s older brother and fellow broadcaster, Greg Gumbel, passed away last year at 78.
