Atlanta police say quick coordination between family members, local departments, and federal authorities stopped what could have been a devastating mass shooting at the world’s busiest airport.
Authorities arrested 49-year-old Billy Joe Cagle, a Cartersville, Georgia man, at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport Monday morning after he allegedly livestreamed plans to “shoot up” the airport while armed with an assault-style rifle.
A Family’s Warning Stopped a Massacre
According to Atlanta Police Chief Darin Schierbaum, Cagle’s family called Cartersville police around 9:30 a.m. to report disturbing behavior on his social media livestream.
“He was on social media making statements that he was headed to the Atlanta airport to ‘shoot it up,’” Schierbaum said. “They also stated he was in possession of an assault rifle.”
That warning triggered an immediate manhunt. Officers in Cartersville relayed the threat to Atlanta Police, who locked down parts of the airport’s South Terminal as travelers continued to arrive for early flights.
Within minutes, police spotted Cagle inside the crowded TSA checkpoint area — an area Chief Schierbaum described as “heavily, heavily packed.”
The Tense Confrontation
Bodycam footage released by police shows officers calmly approaching Cagle near the checkpoint. When asked why he was there, Cagle responded, “Oh, I’m just here. Why?”
Officers had already been alerted to his vehicle — a white Chevrolet pickup truck parked outside the terminal — and were searching for the weapon. Moments later, as they moved in to arrest him, Cagle screamed as he was taken to the ground and handcuffed.
A search of his truck revealed an AR-15-style rifle and 27 rounds of ammunition in the back seat.
Officials Praise Coordination
Atlanta Mayor Andre Dickens called the arrest “a tragedy averted.”
“This individual did have a semi-automatic weapon and was mentally challenged,” Dickens said. “When you have those combinations together, it can turn out to be deadly. Thankfully, family intervention and police coordination prevented bloodshed.”
Chief Schierbaum credited the family’s quick thinking: “We’re briefing you on a success and not a tragedy because a family saw something and said something.”
Heavy Charges Filed
Cagle faces several felony counts, including Terroristic Threats, Possession of a Firearm During the Commission of a Felony, Criminal Attempt to Commit Aggravated Assault, and Possession of a Firearm by a Convicted Felon.
Authorities have not yet confirmed whether he has legal representation.
No Active Threat, But Lingering Questions
The airport — which handled more than 108 million passengers in 2024 — resumed normal operations shortly after the arrest.
Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem released a statement on X, writing, “DHS is in communication with our interagency partners and will share more information as soon as it becomes available. I am thankful this individual was taken into custody before harming anyone.”
While police say the public is safe, the incident has reignited concerns about mental health, online threats, and firearm access — especially in crowded public spaces like airports.
“Every week, we see threats made online that have real-life consequences,” one federal investigator told reporters off-camera. “This one ended safely. The next one might not.”
