A shocking scene unfolded Friday at a major Wikipedia event in Manhattan when an attendee reportedly pulled out a loaded revolver and threatened to take his own life — sending hundreds of participants scrambling for safety.
According to police, the frightening incident occurred at Civic Hall, a technology and innovation hub located in the Zero Irving building near Union Square, where WikiConference North America was in full swing. Witnesses say the man, whose identity has not been released, entered a conference room, appeared distraught, and displayed a handgun before event staff intervened.
“No shots were fired,” an NYPD spokesperson confirmed in a brief statement. “The individual was safely taken into custody, and the situation was resolved without further injuries.”
Attendees described a scene of confusion and terror as organizers quickly called for an evacuation. “One moment we were talking about digital literacy,” said one participant from California, “and the next, people were ducking under tables and running toward the exits. It was surreal.”
Authorities say the man was carrying a loaded revolver and had made verbal threats of suicide. Police have not yet disclosed a motive, but sources close to the investigation told reporters that the suspect may have been experiencing a mental health crisis.
The conference, which brings together tech workers, academics, and digital activists from across the U.S. and Canada, was temporarily shut down while officers cleared the building.
Civic Hall, known for hosting progressive tech initiatives and nonprofit programs, remained closed through the afternoon. “We’re grateful for the quick action of our staff and first responders,” said a Civic Hall spokesperson. “Our priority is always the safety of our guests.”
The scare comes amid growing concerns about gun violence and mental health under President Trump’s administration, which has faced criticism for rolling back firearm safety measures and cutting funding for crisis intervention programs.
New York Mayor Eric Adams called the incident “a grim reminder of the dangers of easy gun access,” adding, “This city has zero tolerance for anyone bringing weapons into our community spaces.”
WikiConference organizers said the event would resume Saturday with increased security and counseling services available for attendees.
“This could have ended tragically,” said one volunteer. “We were lucky today.”
Officials said the suspect remains in custody as police continue to investigate.
