Barack Obama Warns Americans: ‘You’re Right to Be Concerned’

Former President Barack Obama is raising fresh alarms about President Donald Trump’s second-term agenda—calling his use of the National Guard in Democratic cities a “genuine effort to weaken how we have understood democracy.”

Speaking candidly on comedian Marc Maron’s final WTF podcast episode, Obama said Americans “are right to be concerned” about the direction of the country under Trump, who returned to the White House in January 2025. The 44th president accused Republicans of “mind-boggling hypocrisy” for backing Trump’s military deployments after years of attacking Obama over far less.

Obama, now 64, said the country’s democratic foundations are under stress like never before. “When you see an administration suggesting that ordinary street crime is an insurrection or a terrorist act—that’s a genuine effort to weaken how we have understood democracy,” he said. “And that used to be something Democrats and Republicans agreed on.”

The former president also blasted Trump’s Justice Department for what he described as “rewarding friends and punishing enemies.” He warned that the White House had “blown through a range of not simply assumptions, but rules and laws and practices” meant to ensure no one is above the law.

“The last six months have been extraordinary,” Obama continued. “We’re seeing things that would’ve once been unthinkable become normalized.”

Reflecting on his time in office, Obama recalled when promoting democracy abroad was a shared American goal. “When I used to travel around the world, this was back when democracy promotion was still bipartisan,” he told Maron. “Bill Clinton, George W. Bush—even Marco Rubio—understood that civilian control of the military was essential.”

He said that message is now being twisted under Trump, whose decision to send National Guard troops into cities like Chicago and Philadelphia has drawn international criticism and domestic lawsuits. “It wasn’t controversial for me to say that militaries shouldn’t turn force against their own people,” Obama said. “Because that’s inherently corrupting.”

Obama couldn’t resist pointing out what he sees as an absurd double standard. “If I had sent the National Guard into Texas because I thought things were ‘out of control,’ Fox News would’ve melted down,” he said with a laugh. “It is mind-boggling to me how differently they respond when it’s Trump.”

He reminded listeners of a 2015 incident when Texas Republicans—including Sen. Ted Cruz—fueled conspiracy theories that Obama was preparing for “one world government” military takeovers. “That was a sitting U.S. senator,” Obama said incredulously. “They thought I was staging black helicopter operations in Texas.”

“Now those same people cheer on a president using federal troops for political theater,” he added.

Obama’s remarks come amid growing unease about Trump’s escalating clashes with Democratic governors and his expanded use of executive power. Civil rights groups have accused the administration of “militarizing domestic law enforcement” and “weaponizing the federal government” against political opponents.

Political historian Elaine Kamarck of the Brookings Institution told The Atlantic this week that Obama’s comments reflect “a broader fear that the guardrails of democracy are being dismantled one norm at a time.”

“Obama is saying what many institutionalists have whispered for months,” Kamarck said. “This isn’t just about partisanship—it’s about whether American democracy can survive the next four years intact.”

Obama concluded his warning with characteristic restraint but unmistakable urgency: “We’ve seen this movie before, in other countries. It doesn’t end well when the military starts answering to politics instead of the people.”
