Outburst at Knesset Overshadows President’s Bid to Cast Himself as Peacemaker
President Donald Trump’s latest effort to portray himself as a global peace broker erupted into chaos Monday when protesters disrupted his high-profile address to Israel’s parliament.
Trump had arrived in Jerusalem hoping to celebrate a new ceasefire deal between Israel and Hamas — and to burnish his case for a Nobel Peace Prize — but his remarks barely began before two lawmakers derailed the moment.
As Trump praised his team for “ending the age of terror and death,” Arab Israeli lawmaker Ayman Odeh and Jewish left-wing member Ofer Cassif stood up, holding signs reading “Recognize Palestine.” Security immediately dragged both men out, as other legislators jeered and chanted “Trump! Trump!” in support of the U.S. president.
“They kicked me out of the Knesset just for raising the simplest demand — one that the entire world agrees on: Recognize the State of Palestine,” Odeh later wrote on X. “There are two peoples here, and no one is going anywhere.”
Witnesses described Trump as visibly fuming. “He glared toward where they’d been sitting,” one Israeli journalist told Haaretz. “It was supposed to be his victory lap, and it turned into a shouting match.”
The ceasefire deal, brokered with help from Trump’s son-in-law Jared Kushner and hotel developer Steve Witkoff, ended a brutal two-year conflict that has claimed tens of thousands of lives in Gaza. The agreement includes the release of 20 Israeli hostages and nearly 2,000 Palestinian prisoners — though critics note that most of those detainees had been held without formal charges.
Trump called the arrangement “a triumph for civilization” and promised it would usher in “a magnificent new era of peace.” But his speech avoided any mention of Palestinian statehood, a topic that many U.S. allies — including France and the U.K. — say is essential for lasting stability.
Foreign policy analysts say Trump’s approach has been heavy on spectacle and light on substance. “He wants the photo ops and the praise,” said Dr. Lina Hariri, a professor of Middle Eastern politics at Georgetown University. “But this deal doesn’t tackle the fundamental issues — borders, sovereignty, and human rights. Without that, it’s not peace, it’s a pause.”
After the disruption, Trump tried to reclaim the spotlight. “That was very efficient,” he quipped about the security team. “Now, back to Steve.” He then launched into a long monologue praising Witkoff — a real estate attorney with no diplomatic experience — as a “natural genius at negotiation.”
Privately, aides say the president was furious. One senior official told The Washington Post that Trump was “obsessed with the idea of winning a Nobel Prize” and saw the Knesset appearance as a key step in that campaign. “He thought this was his Oslo moment,” the aide said. “He didn’t expect to be booed in the middle of it.”
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu stood by Trump, calling him “the greatest friend Israel has ever had in the White House.” But outside the Knesset, hundreds of protesters rallied against both men, accusing them of sidelining Palestinians for political gain.
“This ceasefire isn’t peace — it’s propaganda,” said Layla Rahim, a human rights activist from Ramallah. “Trump doesn’t care about our freedom. He cares about headlines and trophies.”
Back in Washington, Democrats echoed those doubts. Senator Chris Murphy called the deal “a PR stunt masquerading as diplomacy,” while Representative Ilhan Omar wrote on X that “lasting peace won’t come from photo ops with autocrats.”
For Trump, who has turned every foreign trip into a televised campaign event, the interruption in Jerusalem may have been more than an inconvenience — it was a reminder that not everyone sees him as the world’s peacemaker.
“Maybe he thought he could rewrite the history books,” said Hariri. “Instead, he got a headline — just not the one he wanted.”
