ABC News host George Stephanopoulos abruptly pulled the plug on Vice President JD Vance during Sunday’s edition of This Week, after a heated exchange over new questions surrounding Border Czar Tom Homan and alleged bribe money connected to a 2024 FBI sting.

The vice president had just accused Stephanopoulos of “chasing a weird left-wing rabbit hole” when the host cut him off.

“I think Americans would benefit much more from talking about the shutdown than from this nonsense,” Vance said, insisting Homan “didn’t engage in any criminal wrongdoing.”

Stephanopoulos, visibly frustrated, shot back.

“It’s not a left-wing rabbit hole, Mr. Vice President,” he said. “The question was simple — did Tom Homan accept $50,000 from undercover FBI agents posing as contractors last year? That’s what was on the tape.”

Seconds later, the broadcast cut to commercial.

The confrontation lasted barely eight minutes but ricocheted across social media. Viewers accused Vance of dodging, while conservatives blasted Stephanopoulos for “media ambush tactics.”

The allegations at the center of the storm trace back to September 2024, when FBI agents — posing as business executives — allegedly handed Homan a bag filled with $50,000 in cash. The sting was part of a larger corruption probe into government contracting, though the investigation was later closed without charges.

Homan, a hard-line immigration enforcer and longtime Trump ally, has denied wrongdoing. “I never took a dime,” he said in a statement earlier this year. “This was a political setup designed to discredit the America First movement.”

But Democrats in Congress aren’t convinced. Senate Judiciary Committee Chair Sheldon Whitehouse said in August, “The fact that a top official in the Trump administration was even approached in a bribery sting tells you everything about the ethical rot that’s returned to Washington.”

The fiery moment also reopened old wounds between Trump’s inner circle and ABC News. The president personally sued Stephanopoulos and the network last year after the anchor claimed “judges and two separate juries” had found Trump liable for rape in the E. Jean Carroll case.

While the jury in that civil trial found Trump liable for sexual abuse — not rape under New York law — the dispute triggered months of court battles. ABC quietly settled in late 2024, agreeing to pay $15 million toward Trump’s planned presidential library and another $1 million in legal fees.

That settlement didn’t cool the animosity. A senior White House official, speaking on background, told reporters Sunday, “George has had a personal vendetta against this administration since day one. Cutting off the vice president just proves it.”

The White House dismissed the ABC incident as “media theater.” Still, it landed just as the administration faces growing criticism for its handling of the ongoing government shutdown and accusations of cronyism inside federal agencies.

Democratic strategist Donna Brazile called the exchange “a glimpse of what’s wrong with this administration.”

“Every time they’re asked a tough question about accountability, they cry media bias,” Brazile said. “That’s not leadership — that’s paranoia.”

As the dust settled Sunday afternoon, one thing was clear: the feud between the Trump-Vance White House and mainstream media is only getting louder.
