President Donald Trump lashed out at growing speculation about his mental fitness Thursday, insisting he’s in “great shape” ahead of a surprise medical visit to Walter Reed — even as aides face renewed questions about the 79-year-old’s health and transparency inside his second-term White House.

The president’s unannounced checkup comes just three months after doctors revealed he suffers from chronic venous insufficiency, a circulatory issue common in older adults that can cause swelling in the legs and ankles.

Trump will undergo his second “routine” exam in six months this Friday, though White House officials declined to say what prompted the sudden timing.

“I’m meeting with the troops and I’m going to do a semi-annual physical,” Trump told reporters in the Oval Office, sitting beside Finnish President Alexander Stubb. “Physically, I feel very good. Mentally, I feel very good. I always check early — always be early.”

But his defensive tone hinted at irritation with the chatter surrounding his health.

Trump again boasted about his “perfect” cognitive test results — a point he first made famous during his 2020 term when he recited “person, woman, man, camera, TV” on Fox News.

“I had a perfect score,” Trump bragged Thursday. “One of the doctors said he’s almost never seen that. Did Obama do it? No. Did Biden do it? Biden wouldn’t have made it past the first three questions.”

According to his physician, Dr. Sean Barbabella, Trump scored a flawless 30 out of 30 on the Montreal Cognitive Assessment — a short dementia screening that includes drawing clocks and repeating words. But neurologists say the test is designed to detect serious cognitive decline, not to measure sharpness or intelligence.

“This isn’t an IQ test,” explained Dr. Lara Cohen, a Washington-based neurologist not affiliated with the White House. “It’s meant to identify people showing signs of dementia. Passing it perfectly doesn’t tell us whether someone is cognitively high-functioning — it tells us they’re not severely impaired.”

The White House confirmed in July that Trump had developed chronic venous insufficiency after photos showed him with visibly swollen ankles. He’s also been photographed with bruising on his hands, which aides say comes from “constant handshakes” and routine aspirin use.

Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt dismissed rumors of anything more serious. “President Trump is in excellent health,” she said Wednesday. “He will meet with troops and then complete his standard physical exam before returning to the White House.”

But several administration insiders, speaking on background to reporters from multiple outlets, described a culture of tight control around Trump’s medical information. “Nobody’s allowed to talk about the president’s health unless it’s cleared by him personally,” one longtime White House staffer said. “He wants to look invincible.”

At 79, Trump is the oldest sitting president in American history — a fact that even some allies privately admit worries them heading into the 2026 midterms.

Democrats have seized on his health as a campaign issue, with Illinois Senator Tammy Duckworth saying Thursday, “The American people deserve transparency, not photo ops and bragging about cognitive tests.”

Still, Trump’s supporters insist he’s as sharp as ever. “He works harder than anyone I’ve seen,” said Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene, calling questions about his stamina “part of a coordinated media hit job.”

Yet Trump’s recent public appearances — where he has appeared to slur words or lose his train of thought — have only fueled speculation that his health struggles may be deeper than the White House admits.

“I think a lot of people are worried he’s pushing himself too hard,” said one former aide. “He’s obsessed with proving he’s still the alpha.”

The president’s medical visit is scheduled for Friday morning at Walter Reed Medical Center, where he is expected to meet with troops before undergoing his exam. He’ll return to the White House later in the day, aides said, and is considering a trip to the Middle East next week.

For now, Trump insists all is well. “I feel strong,” he told reporters Thursday. “Stronger than ever.”

Still, the sight of a visibly aging president brushing off questions about his health may not calm voters already uneasy about another year of chaos inside the Trump White House.

  1. I DON\’T BELIEVE HIS PHYSICAL OR MENTAL HEALTH AS HE STATES! HE IS MENTALLY UNSTABLE AND PHYSICAL HEALTH, HE HAS ISSUES AND TOTALLY LIES THAT HE IS GOOD! THE TRUTH SHOULD BE ANNOUNCED & HE NEEDS TO BE IMPEACHED NOW!

  2. Lies and more lies. We all know Trump couldn’t beat Obama, doing a slow walk off a curb. Get out of here with that mess

  3. Most 79 year olds get swollen ankles/legs…just wear compression socks! It’s no big deal. It is not a terminal illness. Trump is sharp minded and any suggestion that he isn’t is pure political BS.

  4. I wonder if with the fear of being fired, replaced, talked disrespectful about and more, would any of his doctors (who took an oath), aides, supporters or anyone else in his clan ever tell the truth or stand up to him?
