In a historic and fiery rebuke on the world stage, Colombian President Gustavo Petro accused President Donald Trump of carrying out “murder from the skies” and demanded that the United Nations launch a criminal investigation into the U.S. leader’s lethal maritime strikes.

The standoff erupted at the 80th United Nations General Assembly in New York, where Petro—Colombia’s first leftist president—used his final address to compare Trump to Adolf Hitler. His words stunned the audience, and according to diplomatic sources, several members of the U.S. delegation abruptly walked out.

“When we believed it was only the property of Hitler, Trump does not speak of democracy, he does not speak of the climate crisis, he does not speak of life—he only threatens, kills, and lets tens of thousands be killed,” Petro declared to gasps inside the chamber.

Trump’s “Shoot First” Strategy

The outrage stems from three U.S. missile strikes in international waters over the past month that left 17 people dead. The Trump administration has described the targets as “narco-terrorist vessels” smuggling drugs into the United States.

But Petro painted a different picture, calling the dead “vulnerable youths fleeing poverty.” He blasted the U.S. for deploying lethal force instead of intercepting the boats. “Trump fires missiles at unarmed migrant boats and accuses them of being drug traffickers and terrorists, when they did not have a single weapon to defend themselves,” Petro said, his voice rising.

“The traffickers live in New York, just a few blocks away from here, and in Miami. There must be criminal charges opened against those officials of the United States, including the senior official who gave the order—President Trump,” he continued.

Trump Doubles Down

Trump, who addressed the UN a day earlier, appeared unapologetic. “To every terrorist thug smuggling poisonous drugs into the United States of America, please be warned that we will blow you out of existence,” he thundered. At one point he added, “Your countries are going to hell.”

Back in Washington, Trump had already bragged on Truth Social that his administration had “shot out a drug-carrying boat” coming from Venezuela.

A Dangerous Rift

The diplomatic clash comes at a precarious time for U.S.–Colombia relations. The two nations have been close partners for decades, bound by trade and anti-narcotics cooperation. But tensions have flared since Trump returned to the White House.

Earlier this year, the president tried to force Colombia to accept planeloads of deported migrants. When Petro refused, Trump threatened to slap 25% tariffs on Colombian exports, escalating to 50% if Bogotá continued to resist. Banking sanctions were also floated.

An uneasy compromise was later struck: deportees would arrive on Colombian military planes rather than U.S. transport planes, a move Petro said would preserve “dignity” and “decent conditions.”

“Global Condemnation”

Foreign policy analysts warn Petro’s blistering attack could fracture what has long been one of America’s most reliable alliances in Latin America. “This is more than a rhetorical broadside—it’s a direct call for criminal accountability against a sitting U.S. president,” said Professor Laura McKenzie, an international law expert at Georgetown University. “That has no precedent at the UN.”

For his part, Petro told reporters after the speech that he had “a moral obligation to speak the truth.” He added, “If we remain silent, if we normalize this kind of violence, then history will judge us as complicit.”

The White House has yet to respond to Petro’s remarks. But one senior U.S. diplomat, speaking on background, called the speech “a disgraceful propaganda stunt that undermines regional security.”

Whether the UN takes up Petro’s call for a war crimes investigation remains unclear. What is certain is that Trump’s hardline policies, cheered by his base at home, are igniting outrage abroad—and raising new fears of America’s isolation on the global stage.

    1. Nobody cares what the President of the Biggest Illegal Drugs Supplying Country in the World has to say! We’re cutting them off from our USA! Democrats will have to move to Columbia if wanting to continue abusing drugs and murdering people!

  1. If only the Colombia president would do his job and stop the drug cartel killing thousands of Americans with drugs. Remember they are the real terrorists when leaders don’t take action to stop evil or killing people by any means. How many millions are going to him under the table by the drug cartel. Trump not perfect and absolutely not a Hitler but the beast America has had and the world to begin to open their minds to real problems
