Armed Security for ‘Known Guest’ Arrested at Kirk Memorial

Authorities in Arizona have arrested a heavily armed man accused of posing as a law enforcement officer just hours before a massive public funeral for conservative firebrand Charlie Kirk.

According to the Arizona Department of Public Safety, 42-year-old Joshua Runkles was taken into custody Saturday at State Farm Stadium in Glendale—where Kirk’s memorial service is scheduled to take place. Officials say Runkles was carrying an arsenal of weapons and fake police credentials.

“He had multiple firearms, knives, and falsified law enforcement badges,” said DPS spokesperson Lt. Alex Romero. “He was arrested on the spot without incident.”

Runkles now faces charges of felony impersonation of a police officer and misdemeanor weapons possession in a restricted area. He was booked into Maricopa County Jail and later released on bond.

Who Was He Working For?

In a twist that raised more questions than answers, Turning Point USA, the conservative youth organization Kirk founded, confirmed Runkles was “doing advance security” for a guest planning to attend the high-profile memorial.

“We do not believe this individual was acting with criminal intent,” said TPUSA spokesperson Andrew Kolvet on X. “But he was not coordinated with TPUSA security or the U.S. Secret Service.”

Kolvet added, “This occurred before the venue was fully locked down. We’re taking every precaution to ensure safety.”

The incident has triggered scrutiny from law enforcement and raised concerns about gaps in private security coordination just days before the service is set to draw one of the largest political crowds of the year.

100,000 Expected to Attend—Including Trump

The memorial for Charlie Kirk, who was fatally shot at a Turning Point USA event earlier this month, is expected to attract over 100,000 mourners. Among them: President Donald Trump, Vice President JD Vance, and a long list of right-wing politicians, media personalities, and grassroots activists.

The event, which will be held at the same stadium that hosts the Arizona Cardinals, has been designated a National Special Security Event, giving the U.S. Secret Service full operational control of safety protocols.

“Our priority is keeping everyone safe, including the President,” a federal official told us under condition of anonymity. “We’re evaluating all security contractors and ensuring full coordination with law enforcement.”

A Tense Backdrop

Kirk’s assassination shocked the conservative world and ignited a national conversation about political violence, security failures, and gun control. His death has galvanized Trump-aligned conservatives ahead of the 2026 midterms, with some likening the movement to a “conservative resurrection rally.”

“Charlie gave his life for this movement,” TPUSA founder Candace Owens recently said. “His funeral will be a statement of resolve, not retreat.”

With security now under a microscope, authorities say they are not taking any chances.

“We’re sweeping the stadium multiple times a day. Nothing will be left to chance,” said Lt. Romero.

Runkles’ motivations remain unclear, but DPS confirmed he has no known criminal record or ties to extremist groups.
