ABC has abruptly yanked Jimmy Kimmel Live! from its schedule, an unprecedented move that critics say exposes the raw political pressure now bearing down on America’s media under President Donald Trump.
An ABC spokesperson confirmed to CNN that the late-night program will be “pre-empted indefinitely,” a decision that stunned both Hollywood insiders and viewers. The announcement came just hours after Nexstar, which operates dozens of ABC affiliates, announced it would no longer carry Kimmel’s show “for the foreseeable future” in response to what it called “comments made by Mr. Kimmel concerning the killing of Charlie Kirk.”
The chain of events escalated when Federal Communications Commission Chairman Brendan Carr, a Trump appointee, went on right-wing YouTuber Benny Johnson’s channel and threatened to strip ABC of its broadcasting license altogether. “If ABC wants to operate as a partisan outlet, they may find themselves without the privilege of using the public airwaves,” Carr warned.
The controversy stems from Kimmel’s Monday night monologue following the shocking assassination of conservative activist Charlie Kirk. Republicans quickly seized on the tragedy, claiming the shooter had no ties to their movement.
Kimmel pushed back on that narrative, telling viewers: “We hit some new lows over the weekend with the MAGA gang desperately trying to characterize this kid who murdered Charlie Kirk as anything other than one of them and doing everything they can to score political points from it.”
Notably, Kimmel never claimed the suspect was a Republican or MAGA supporter. But Carr accused the comedian of fueling a “false narrative” and openly threatened ABC’s license — a move media experts say is virtually unheard of in modern broadcasting.
The decision to silence Kimmel is already sparking outrage across Hollywood and Washington. Media watchdogs warn that this is the clearest example yet of Trump’s administration weaponizing federal agencies to punish critics.
“This is state censorship, plain and simple,” said one veteran television producer, who asked not to be named out of fear of retaliation. “If a late-night host can be pulled off the air for criticizing the MAGA movement, what’s next? News anchors? Journalists? Entire networks?”
Democratic lawmakers also blasted the move. Senator Elizabeth Warren called the FCC’s threat “an authoritarian abuse of power designed to intimidate the press.” Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez went further, posting on X: “First they came for Jimmy Kimmel. Who will they silence next?”
For more than two decades, Kimmel has been one of late-night television’s most recognizable voices, mixing comedy with sharp-edged political critique. His show regularly skewered Trump during his first presidency, earning both high ratings and constant attacks from the right.
Now, with Trump back in the White House, critics say the administration has found a new way to muzzle its opponents. “The FCC is supposed to regulate the airwaves in the public interest,” said former FCC Commissioner Michael Copps. “It was never meant to be used as a cudgel against political speech.”
As of now, ABC has not announced whether Kimmel will return — or if the show is effectively canceled. For viewers and industry insiders, the silence is deafening.
“This is bigger than Jimmy Kimmel,” a Democratic strategist told us. “This is about whether satire, free expression, and criticism of those in power can survive in Trump’s America.”

They are the “any other”.

About tine
Here we go – definitely on our way back in time to the 1930’s in Germany. Silencing all who disagree with the current “Commander-in-Chief.”
You would think that a guy who came from show called
“Asshole” would be cautious about what he says on network television. Making remarks about someone who is murdered especially during today’s reflections on political & social discourse he would have been smart enough to blame the victim or some other nonsensical attitude would have common sense but no. For far too long the Leftist side has praised violence, participated in violence & cheered when Moderate or Conservatives have been been verbally or physically attacked & now they even praise murderers & blame the victims.
