Scandal Ridden Ex-Congressman Arrested

Madison Cawthorn’s second act in politics may be over before it even begins.

The disgraced former North Carolina congressman—once hailed as a rising MAGA star—was arrested Wednesday in Florida after failing to show up for a mandatory court appearance related to a traffic charge. His excuse? A “scheduling misunderstanding,” according to his team.

But critics say it’s just the latest episode in a long-running saga of entitlement, recklessness, and legal chaos from a man who once called Capitol rioters “political prisoners.”

Cawthorn, 30, was taken into custody in Cape Coral on a warrant stemming from a missed court date in neighboring Collier County. He had been arrested in August for driving without a license, a charge he was expected to answer for in court—but skipped.

Instead of facing the music, Cawthorn was reportedly crisscrossing Florida laying the groundwork for a rumored congressional run in the state’s 19th District, where Republican Rep. Byron Donalds is expected to vacate his seat.

“He’s out there trying to stage a comeback while treating the law like an optional suggestion,” said one Florida Democratic strategist who requested anonymity. “It’s peak MAGA hypocrisy.”

Cawthorn was released on a $2,000 bond.

In a carefully worded statement to ABC affiliate Gulf Coast Now, his spokesperson said:

“Former Congressman Madison Cawthorn was arrested earlier today for failure to appear for a routine traffic infraction. Madison keeps a very busy schedule and, due to a scheduling misunderstanding, did not appear in court this morning.”

Critics weren’t buying it. “If the average American skipped a court date, they’d be in serious trouble,” tweeted one X (formerly Twitter) user. “But Madison’s just ‘too busy’? Give me a break.”

Cawthorn burst onto the national stage in 2020 as the youngest member of Congress—and quickly made headlines for all the wrong reasons.

He lost re-election in 2022 after a bizarre series of scandals, including claims (never substantiated) that GOP colleagues invited him to cocaine-fueled orgies. Even Donald Trump seemed to distance himself after that fiasco, though Cawthorn remains loyal to the embattled 47th president.

His legal troubles stretch back years:

• March 2022: Charged with driving with a revoked license in North Carolina.
• October 2021: Pulled over for driving 89 mph in a 65-mph zone.
• May 2022: Caught trying to carry a loaded gun through airport security—for the second time.
• April 2024: Crashed into a parked Florida State Trooper’s vehicle.

Dashcam footage from that crash showed Cawthorn’s SUV slamming into the patrol car with no attempt to brake. He was not seriously injured, but the trooper was hospitalized.

In May 2022, Cawthorn confirmed the authenticity of a leaked video showing him—fully nude—dry-humping a male friend’s head while moaning exaggeratedly. He called it a “joke between bros” and blamed political enemies for leaking it.

“Is this really who the GOP wants representing them in Congress again?” asked Florida resident Carmen Elwell, 42, in a local town hall forum. “He’s a walking scandal.”

Cawthorn remains a vocal supporter of Donald Trump, and even spoke at the now-infamous “Stop the Steal” rally on January 6, 2021, shortly before the Capitol was attacked.

Months later, he doubled down on false election claims and referred to the insurrectionists who assaulted police officers as “political prisoners.”

As of 2025, with Trump back in the White House and facing a slew of new congressional investigations, Cawthorn has been attempting to ride the MAGA wave back into politics—despite no clear signs the electorate wants him back.

With mounting legal woes, a track record of reckless behavior, and a fractured Republican base, Cawthorn’s future remains uncertain.

Political analyst Tanya Green summed it up bluntly:

“He’s not a serious leader. He’s a reality show character with a rap sheet. And Floridians deserve better.”

Whether voters in Florida’s 19th are ready to give Cawthorn a second chance—or whether this arrest finally ends his chaotic career—remains to be seen.
