In a chilling echo of America’s increasingly volatile political landscape, Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez abruptly postponed a Sunday rally in North Carolina after the shocking assassination of right-wing activist Charlie Kirk.
The New York congresswoman was scheduled to headline a major campaign stop in Raleigh as part of her fiery “Fighting Oligarchy” tour — a series of rallies aimed at energizing progressive voters in battleground states ahead of the 2026 midterms. But in the wake of Kirk’s fatal shooting last week, AOC’s team cited “security concerns and respect for the victim’s family” in pulling the plug.
“The scourge of gun violence and political violence must end,” Ocasio-Cortez posted on X (formerly Twitter). “The shooting of Charlie Kirk is the latest incident of this chaos and it must stop. We cannot go down this road.”

The shooting of Charlie Kirk is the latest incident of this chaos and it must stop. We cannot go down this road.
There is no place for it in America and we wish for his recovery.
The 35-year-old Democrat had planned to appear alongside North Carolina Democratic leaders in Raleigh on Sunday, a key state in the party’s strategy to blunt Trump’s grip on the South. But news of Kirk’s death — announced Wednesday evening by President Donald Trump himself — sent shockwaves through political circles.
Kirk, 31, was gunned down while delivering a speech to conservative students at Utah Valley University. Witnesses say the gunman approached the stage and fired a single round into Kirk’s neck before fleeing. He later died at a local hospital.
The gunman remains at large.
“We’ve got to be honest — this is where Trump’s America has taken us,” said a Democratic strategist familiar with the rally planning. “A man was assassinated while speaking to students. The stakes are higher than ever.”
Kirk, a polarizing figure in American politics, rose to prominence as the founder of Turning Point USA — a far-right campus organization that flourished during the Trump era. He was known for fiery culture war rhetoric and was an outspoken ally of President Trump throughout both of his presidencies.
While liberals and progressives often clashed with Kirk’s tactics, his murder has drawn bipartisan condemnation.
“No one deserves this. Not here. Not in a democracy,” said Rep. Ayanna Pressley (D-MA). “Whether it’s Gabby Giffords, Steve Scalise, or now Charlie Kirk — violence cannot become a normal part of political life in this country.”
Kirk leaves behind a wife and two young children.
President Trump, now in his second term, announced Kirk’s death in a somber address from the White House Rose Garden Wednesday night.
“Charlie was a warrior. He loved this country. He was taken from us by the radical left,” Trump declared, offering no evidence but further inflaming partisan tensions.
His comments sparked outrage from Democrats, who accused the president of exploiting a tragedy for political gain.
“Instead of bringing the nation together, he’s stoking division — again,” Ocasio-Cortez said in a follow-up post. “We can grieve without scapegoating. We must.”
Authorities in Utah have launched a multi-agency manhunt for the suspect, and federal officials are reportedly involved. The motive remains unclear, though speculation and misinformation have flooded social media platforms.
Ocasio-Cortez has not yet announced a rescheduled date for the Raleigh rally, but her team insists the tour will continue — with increased security.
“We’re not backing down,” one aide told the press. “But we are adjusting to a political climate that has become tragically dangerous.”
As tensions rise and rhetoric boils over, both parties now face a new political reality — one where the campaign trail is no longer just a place for speeches, but a stage for tragedy.
