Utah Valley University descended into chaos on Wednesday after right-wing activist Charlie Kirk was shot during a live event on campus. Kirk, founder of Turning Point USA and a staunch Trump ally, was midway through his “American Comeback Tour” when the attack unfolded.
According to witnesses, Kirk was seated under a tent answering student questions when a single shot rang out. Videos circulating online show Kirk recoiling, clutching his neck, and slumping as security rushed him away. Blood could be seen on his collar as the crowd screamed and fled in panic.
The university confirmed that Kirk was the only person shot. Authorities locked down the campus, and a suspect is now in custody. The FBI has deployed agents to assist in the investigation, calling the situation “fluid and ongoing.” No details about the suspect or possible motive have been released.
“Agents will be on the scene quickly,” said FBI Director Kash Patel. “Our thoughts are with Charlie, his loved ones, and everyone affected by this violence.”
Vice President JD Vance and other prominent Republicans quickly called for prayers, while Utah Senator Mike Lee posted, “Please join me in praying for Charlie Kirk and the students gathered there.”
Kirk’s visit was part of a nationwide college tour, billed by Turning Point USA as a “high-energy conversation about conservative values.” The attack comes amid escalating tensions on campuses where conservative speakers have increasingly faced protests — but violence on this scale is rare.
Eyewitnesses told reporters that the shot appeared to come from a nearby building overlooking the courtyard, though police have not confirmed that detail. “He just grabbed his neck and collapsed,” said one student. “Then everyone started running. It was chaos.”
Kirk’s condition has not been officially updated, but early reports suggest he was seriously injured. Hospitals in the area were immediately placed on alert.
Democrats are already pointing to the incident as another reminder of rising political violence in Trump’s America. With the president’s rallies drawing record crowds and partisan divides widening, today’s shooting is likely to intensify national debate over safety, rhetoric, and gun laws.
