First Lady Melania Trump is urging the country to focus on “pre-emptive intervention” after a gunman opened fire at Annunciation Catholic School in Minneapolis on Wednesday, killing two children and injuring 17 others — including 14 young students — in what officials are calling one of the deadliest school attacks of the year.

In a series of posts on X, the first lady proposed a sweeping approach aimed at identifying potential shooters before they act, a suggestion critics are already comparing to “behavioral surveillance.”

“The tragic mass killing in Minnesota illuminates the need for pre-emptive intervention in identifying potential school shooters,” she wrote. “Early warning signs are often evident, with many individuals exhibiting concerning behaviors and making violent threats online prior to their actions.”

She added that the country “must look into behavioral threat assessments across all levels of society — beginning in our homes, extending through school districts, and of course, social media platforms.”

Police say 23-year-old Robin Westman, born Robert Westman, opened fire with a semi-automatic rifle from outside the church, shattering stained-glass windows and unleashing chaos as families gathered for the first week of the school year.

“He began firing a rifle through the church windows towards the children sitting in the pews,” Minneapolis Police Chief Brian O’Hara said at a press briefing late Wednesday. “It was calculated, it was targeted, and it was devastating.”

An eight-year-old boy and a ten-year-old girl were killed instantly. Fourteen children and three adults were wounded. Witnesses described a scene of “pure panic” as parents and parishioners scrambled to shield children from the gunfire.

President Donald Trump ordered flags at half-staff until August 31 but stopped short of addressing gun reform directly. Within hours of the shooting, conservatives in the administration began focusing on the shooter’s gender identity rather than the weapon used.

White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt called the attacker a “demonic force” and a “transgender maniac,” while Donald Trump Jr. reposted Rep. Byron Donalds’ claim that “radical gender ideology” and mental health issues — not guns — were to blame.

“For years, the left has promoted radical gender ideology, ignored glaring mental health issues & spewed hateful rhetoric,” Donalds wrote on X. “This is the insanity that’s come from their movement.”

Trump Jr. added a simple “100%.”

On MSNBC, former Biden Press Secretary Jen Psaki delivered an emotional monologue blasting the White House for “shifting the narrative” away from America’s gun crisis.

“We have seen this play out over and over again,” Psaki said. “There is a shooting. Then come the thoughts and prayers. And then comes the attempt to shift the focus.”

Psaki emphasized that gun violence is uniquely American. “There are antisemitic people all over the world. There are trans people all over the world. There are people with serious mental health struggles all over the world. But this is the only country where shootings like this one happen this often.”

The Minneapolis tragedy marks the 42nd school shooting of 2025, according to data from the Gun Violence Archive. Despite rising public demand for tighter background checks and bans on high-capacity rifles, Congress remains gridlocked.

Local officials echoed Psaki’s frustration. “This community is grieving, and yet here we are again, talking about anything except the guns,” said Minneapolis Mayor Andrea Jenkins. “We’ve failed these kids.”

As families mourn, Melania Trump’s proposal signals a growing divide within the administration itself. While the first lady focuses on behavioral assessments, her husband’s allies continue to push cultural blame narratives, leaving America without a clear path forward.

    1. We need to get rid of Democrat’s beloved drug addiction, homosexuality addiction, trans addiction, religion addiction… combining those addictions is fatal…

  1. Afraid this woman offers no solution. She is married to the biggest offender. There are easy solutions. Funding for mental health. Facilities back

  2. This has nothing to do with gun control. It has to do with mental illness. I’m sure this individual mother would have known he had mental issues going on for quite some time!

  3. If this was the 42nd school shooting this year and it was the worst with only 2 kills then I’ll take that as a win.

  4. notice how Democrats and left wing sympathizers always point to guns as the problem. Read the message. It is not about guns but about people who are yes, mentally deranged, and violent. The answer is not found in removing guns from people-guns don’t kill unless operated by people. Get help for the mentally challenged and lock up the violent offenders!
