Whistleblower warns “catastrophic impact” after top-secret records allegedly dumped on unsecured cloud server

In a stunning revelation that has thrown Washington into turmoil, a Social Security Administration whistleblower claims millions of Americans’ most sensitive personal data—including full names, birthdates, addresses, and Social Security numbers—was uploaded to a vulnerable cloud server controlled by operatives tied to Elon Musk’s controversial Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE).

Charles Borges, the SSA’s chief data officer, filed an explosive complaint obtained by The New York Times, alleging that DOGE operatives copied the government’s master Social Security database to an internal server accessible to a select group—including Edward “Big Balls” Coristine, a notorious figure within Musk’s cost-cutting empire.

“Should bad actors gain access to this cloud environment, Americans may be susceptible to widespread identity theft, may lose vital health care and food benefits, and the government may be responsible for reissuing every American a new Social Security number at great cost,” Borges warned.

Trump’s DOGE Gamble Backfires

The Department of Government Efficiency was launched by Elon Musk under Trump’s directive to “slash bloated bureaucracy” and cut federal spending. Instead, critics say DOGE has sparked chaos. Agencies were gutted, thousands of career officials purged, and critical oversight mechanisms dismantled—all in the name of speed and savings.

Since returning to office in January, President Trump has repeatedly defended DOGE as “the future of government,” calling Musk a “genius” for replacing federal staff with “America’s brightest young engineers.” But mounting scandals paint a different picture.

“This isn’t efficiency. It’s recklessness,” said Rep. Jamie Raskin (D-MD). “The Social Security database is one of the most sensitive federal systems in existence, and DOGE has turned it into a hacker’s playground.”

Who Is “Big Balls”?

One of the most alarming revelations is that Edward Coristine—known online as “Big Balls”—may have had unrestricted access to the SSA database. The 19-year-old became a MAGA folk hero earlier this year after claiming he was assaulted during a carjacking, fueling Trump’s fiery calls for a “law and order crackdown.”

Coristine, a former Musk aide, has since emerged as a central player in DOGE’s internal operations. According to sources, his team bypassed traditional security audits when migrating sensitive data. “There were no guardrails,” a former SSA cybersecurity analyst told us. “It’s like handing the nuclear codes to a teenager.”

Coristine did not respond to multiple requests for comment.

SSA Pushes Back—But Questions Remain

In a statement to The Daily Beast, the SSA denied any confirmed breach and insisted that “all personal data remains secure.”

“SSA stores all personal data in secure environments that have robust safeguards in place,” the statement read. “The data referenced in the complaint is stored in a long-standing environment used by SSA and walled off from the internet.”

But Borges’s complaint contradicts this account, alleging that DOGE created “enormous vulnerabilities” by moving data into a poorly protected cloud system without oversight or independent auditing.

Americans at Risk

Cybersecurity experts warn the potential fallout is staggering. If the allegations are true, identity theft on an unprecedented scale could cripple critical systems ranging from Medicare to unemployment benefits.

“This is a five-alarm fire,” said Dr. Ava Chen, a cybersecurity professor at MIT. “Reissuing hundreds of millions of Social Security numbers would take years and cost taxpayers billions. And that’s assuming the damage hasn’t already been done.”

Lawsuits, Oversight, and the Chaos Ahead

The revelations come as lawsuits pile up seeking to block DOGE’s engineers from accessing confidential government databases. Congressional Democrats are calling for an emergency hearing, while Trump allies accuse whistleblowers of trying to “sabotage government efficiency.”

Meanwhile, behind closed doors, the administration is reportedly scrambling to rehire thousands of veteran federal employees fired under DOGE’s aggressive cuts—a tacit admission, critics say, that Musk’s experiment has spiraled out of control.

“This is the price of dismantling government without a plan,” said Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-MA). “Trump handed Elon Musk the keys, and now Americans are the collateral damage.”
