A school bus ride in New Orleans spiraled into violence last week when a bus monitor was allegedly beaten, bitten, and left bloodied by a student and her mother in a shocking midday attack that sent her to the emergency room.

The incident occurred Thursday, August 21, aboard an Orleans Parish school bus transporting students from McDonogh 35 College Preparatory High School, a local charter school managed by InspireNOLA Charter Schools.

The bus monitor, identified as Tamika Jackson, suffered multiple injuries, including deep bite marks on her lips and thumbs, scratches across her face, and a bald patch where her hair was ripped out.

“They bit her in her face, on her lips, on her thumbs,” Tamika’s husband, Johnny Jackson, told WVUE. “She has a large gash running across her face. This wasn’t just a fight. My wife was mauled.”

According to Johnny, the altercation began when Tamika instructed a student not to sit in the last two rows of the bus.

“She suspected something inappropriate was happening back there,” Johnny explained. “She told the girl to move. That’s when the student called her mom.”

Minutes later, during a stop along the route, the student’s mother allegedly boarded the bus and punched Tamika in the face before joining her daughter in attacking her.

A video reportedly shows Tamika being tackled to the floor, punched repeatedly in the head, and scratched while trying to shield herself. Another adult can be seen on the bus but does not intervene.

Photos released after the incident show Tamika with cuts across her lips and cheeks and a large bald spot where her hair was yanked out.

Johnny described the moment: “The mom just reaches out and hits her, and then the daughter joins in. Two people against one — while my wife is just doing her job.”

In a statement, InspireNOLA Charter Schools said it is “actively investigating” the incident alongside local authorities and the bus company:

“The safety and well-being of our students and staff remain a top priority,” the statement read.

But frustration is growing after police issued Tamika herself a municipal court summons, treating the case as a “routine fight” until video evidence is reviewed.

“This is insane,” Johnny said. “My wife was at work. She was attacked while doing her job, and now she’s being treated like a suspect.”

The New Orleans Police Department has not yet filed an official report, saying they are awaiting the video review before making determinations.

The attack has sparked outrage among parents and school staff, many of whom say student misbehavior on buses is reaching crisis levels.

“What’s happening with our youth?” Johnny asked. “There’s no respect for authority anymore, and now even parents are joining in. Where does it stop?”

Community leaders are calling for stronger protections for bus monitors and drivers, including security cameras, stricter enforcement of boarding rules, and quicker responses from law enforcement.

As of Monday, Tamika Jackson is recovering at home but faces a long healing process from her physical injuries and emotional trauma. InspireNOLA has pledged to work with the bus company and police to “prevent anything like this from happening again.”

Meanwhile, parents are demanding answers — and accountability.

“This can’t be brushed aside,” one McDonogh 35 parent said. “If school staff aren’t safe, our kids aren’t safe either.”

  1. OMG…..excuse me folks. I am an old man and cannot honestly comment on this like I would want to as running a risk of being arrested myself. This incident was not just a mother and her child attacking another woman doing her job. It is this culture that is at blame for the apathy and indifference on how to properly handle things. Once we begin to settle our differences looking down the barrel of a gun or their fist …. we have social and cultural issues. Not to treat this as an isolated fight. This represents something much larger than that. Those two attackers should be locked up for awhile. To teach them hard earned lessons.

  2. That mother and daughter acted like animals and should be severely punished. In addition the daughter should be expelled and both should have to serve jail time. This is totally unacceptable. No wonder the girl has no morals, look at what the mother has taught her. Totally disgusting!
