JD Vance Breaks the Law with Fishing Trip?

Vice President JD Vance’s carefully staged fishing trip in the English countryside has cast an awkward shadow over U.S.–U.K. relations — and it has nothing to do with Brexit, trade, or NATO.

It turns out the outing, hosted by British Foreign Secretary David Lammy earlier this month, was technically against the law. Lammy has now admitted he didn’t have the legally required rod license, an oversight he called an “administrative error.”

The British Foreign Office confirmed Lammy quickly purchased the correct license once the mistake came to light. But the damage was already done: the incident has raised questions about how seriously top officials take basic compliance with the very laws they expect ordinary citizens to follow.

In England and Wales, anyone fishing for trout or coarse fish in freshwater must have a valid license, even on private lakes. Without one, violators risk fines up to $3,394 and the confiscation of their gear.

“It’s the kind of regulation everyday Britons know about,” said London-based political analyst Harriet Mason. “For a senior government minister — and during a high-profile visit with the vice president of the United States — it’s embarrassing. It’s a self-inflicted unforced error.”

The Environment Agency, which enforces the rule, would not confirm whether Lammy will face a fine. “Everyone who goes fishing needs a license to help improve our rivers, lakes, and the sport anglers love,” the agency said in a statement. All fish caught during the event were returned to the water.

The vice president’s own paperwork remains unclear. When asked by reporters if Vance had secured the necessary permit, his office did not respond. Newsweek confirmed they reached out to his team by email, but as of publication, there’s been no answer.

Some Democrats have seized on the moment to criticize Vance’s judgment. “This is a pattern — he’s quick with a photo-op, slow with the details,” one party strategist told me, noting that the trip also drew protests from U.K. residents in the Cotswolds, where at least 50 demonstrators chanted “Go home” and called him “despicable.”

The fishing trip took place at Chevening House, a government-owned mansion in Kent often used for high-level diplomacy. Lammy and Vance reportedly enjoyed carp fishing before moving on to closed-door talks.

Vance later joked: “Unfortunately, the one strain on the special relationship is that all of my kids caught fish, but the foreign secretary did not.”

But political optics experts say the incident feeds into a broader narrative about how the Trump administration — now back in power — approaches diplomacy. “When you’re vice president, everything you do abroad is part of your country’s image,” said University of Sussex political historian Dr. Elliot Greene. “A fishing license might seem trivial, but it’s part of the bigger picture: rules matter.”

If the Environment Agency decides to pursue enforcement, Lammy could face a fine or other penalties. But politically, the story has already made headlines on both sides of the Atlantic.

“It’s not Watergate,” Greene added. “But it’s a reminder that in politics, small mistakes can hook you just as easily as big ones.”
