Trump Threatens Putin with ‘Severe Consequences’

President Donald Trump is heading into one of the most consequential foreign policy moments of his presidency — and he’s already brandishing threats.

Speaking from Washington on Wednesday, Trump warned there would be “very severe consequences” if Russian President Vladimir Putin refuses to agree to end the war in Ukraine during their face-to-face meeting this Friday in Anchorage, Alaska.

The stark ultimatum comes as global leaders brace for a summit that could define the course of a conflict now dragging into its fourth year — a war that has cost tens of thousands of lives, shattered European security, and tested America’s alliances.

French President Emmanuel Macron revealed after a closed-door video call with European heads of state that Trump “was very clear” about his goal: securing a ceasefire. Macron, who clashed with Trump repeatedly during his first term, struck a cautious tone, noting that “clarity” from Trump does not always translate into follow-through.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, who also joined the call, was blunt in his assessment. “Putin is bluffing,” Zelensky told leaders, accusing Moscow of trying to “apply pressure on all sectors of the Ukrainian front” in the days leading up to the summit.

“He wants the world to believe he can take all of Ukraine,” Zelensky warned. “But he cannot — and he knows it.”

Zelensky also took aim at Putin’s public defiance of Western sanctions, calling it “an act.”
“He acts as if they don’t matter, as if they are ineffective,” Zelensky said. “But they are very helpful — they are hitting Russia’s war economy hard.”

Indeed, U.S. Treasury data shows Russia’s GDP has contracted sharply since 2022, with military production increasingly dependent on black-market supply chains and sanctioned technologies smuggled from abroad. European economists have warned that while Moscow has adapted to some penalties, the long-term toll could be devastating.

The choice of Anchorage as the summit location is symbolic — a halfway point between Washington and Moscow, but also U.S. soil close to the Arctic, where both nations have clashed over military and resource claims. It’s also a stark reminder of America’s Cold War-era posture toward Russia, when Alaska’s strategic importance was paramount.

“This isn’t just about Ukraine,” a senior State Department official told me on background. “It’s about setting boundaries with Russia — in Eastern Europe, in cyberspace, and in the Arctic. If Trump walks out of Alaska without something concrete, it will send a dangerous message.”

The summit carries enormous risks for Trump. His critics say his history with Putin — from the 2018 Helsinki meeting where he appeared to side with the Kremlin over U.S. intelligence agencies, to his past questioning of NATO’s value — raises concerns he could give away too much in pursuit of a “deal.”

But Trump, speaking at the Kennedy Center before flying west, brushed off doubts.
“I know how to make a deal,” he told reporters. “If Putin is serious about peace, we’ll know it. If he’s not, there will be consequences like he’s never seen before.”

For Zelensky and European leaders, the hope is that “consequences” means tougher sanctions and military aid — not vague threats or political theater. For Putin, the challenge will be walking into Alaska knowing his war machine is under strain, but unwilling to appear weak before a domestic audience.

The world will find out Friday whether Trump’s warning is bluster — or the beginning of a dramatic turning point in the war.
