Seven months after taking office on the promise he’d “end the war in Ukraine in one day,” President Donald Trump has admitted something his critics have long suspected—his so-called “friendship” with Vladimir Putin is useless when it comes to saving civilian lives.
Speaking at the Kennedy Center Honors nominee announcement on Aug. 13, Trump stunned reporters with a blunt answer when asked if he could convince Putin to stop bombing Ukrainian apartment buildings, hospitals, and nursing homes.
“I guess the answer to that is ‘no,’ because I’ve had this conversation,” Trump said. “I’ve had a lot of good conversations with him. Then I go home and I see a rocket hit a nursing home or an apartment building, and people are laying dead in the streets.”
The remark comes ahead of Trump’s high-profile sit-down with Putin this Friday at Joint Base Elmendorf–Richardson in Anchorage, Alaska—billed by the White House as a “listening exercise” rather than a formal negotiation. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky is not invited.
Trump built much of his 2024 campaign on the claim that his personal ties to Putin would end the war “fast” and “cheap.” He insisted it was “Biden’s war” and said he’d stop it without writing “a blank check” to Kyiv. But his own team has now pushed back his self-imposed deadline twice—first from spring to summer, and now with no clear end in sight.
Instead of delivering new sanctions or serious diplomatic wins, Trump has scaled down U.S. aid to Ukraine while trying to drag both sides into talks. “I’ll be very proud to end this war, along with the five other wars I ended,” he told the press. “But, uh, I guess the answer to that is probably ‘no.’”
Trump also recycled one of his most controversial claims: that investigations into Russian election interference during his first term—what he calls “the Russia Hoax”—hurt U.S.-Russia relations so badly they actually prompted Putin to invade Ukraine in 2022.
“Those witch hunts put a strain on the relationship,” Trump said, suggesting he’s still paying the price for the Mueller probe and bipartisan intelligence reports that confirmed Russian meddling in 2016.
Despite the spin, Trump’s admission is the most public sign yet that he lacks leverage over Putin—an image that could hurt him politically at home. His opponents are already framing the Alaska meeting as “a photo-op for Putin” rather than a path to peace.
Former Obama administration official and Russia expert Evelyn Farkas told MSNBC on Wednesday, “This isn’t diplomacy—it’s theater. Putin gets legitimacy just by standing next to Trump, and Trump leaves with nothing but broken promises.”
With the war entering its fourth year, Ukrainian officials are privately skeptical that anything substantial will come from the meeting. “We don’t need another round of talk for talk’s sake,” one senior adviser to Zelensky told The Washington Post. “We need guarantees—something Putin has never honored.”
Trump, however, insists he can still surprise the world. “We’ll see what happens,” he said. “Nobody knows deals like I know deals.”

See Trump is just real and a realist! If something didn’t work like he thought he admits it unlike all predecessor presidents!
Second TRUMP NEVER SAID HE HAD TIES TO RUSSIA OR A CLOSE RELATIONSHIP WITH PUTIN. It’s you liberals back to Russia, Russia, Russia!
Do you know that when Germany was unified the west assured Yeltsin (then Russia’s president) that NATO would NEVER expand eastward? Well NATI did and incited Russia to start this war!
Putin is a bad guy, no doubt but the West gave him excuses to start this was by breaking their word!! Remember that.
And who benefits? Corrupt Zelenskyy and all of the military industrial manufacturers in the west! Eisenhower warned us about the military industrial complex!!!
Think about if we had let Russia join the European common market like Yeltsin wanted! There would be no Putin, no war in Ukraine and there would be no reason for NATO which is something the military industrial complex just couldn’t let happen!!
Usual TDS WOKE NextGen BS article full of lies… Trump had the war ENDED months ago but warmonger Zelenskyy backed by warmonger Europe and warmonger Democrats refused to sign…
Now Zelenskyy is further beaten down to reality and knows that was a mistake…
And Good Trump now has to pound out still another war ending agreement with evil slimy warmongering Putin…
I wouldn’t bet my retirement on Trump wrangling anything substantive out of Putin.
Putin has led Trump along like a puppy on a leash for years. Trump hav been conned by Putin the consummate conman in the world today. If he is just now realizing the con run on him, then he is pathetic as both POTUS and conman himself.
That Putin has no give voluntarily should be universally understood. Why Trump allowed himself to be dipped like never before says something about his powerful people perception. He has none. That includes what has been said about his mastery of reading the room and managing perceptions of those he meets. It’s nothing but smoke and mirrors slightly of hand.
Putin is not like anyone else Trump has dealt with. He should have realized who Putin is and was at first meeting. Trump’s massive ego clouded his eyes to the reality that Putin is smarter and more cunning than Trump was on his best day. Trump should have some time in the KGB to get some idea of what toughness is aand what it takes.
over 30(ave) lies per day.
Angelo, Trump has never admitted to being wrong ever. Each time he has pinned it on someone else and had them take the fall, or volunteer ed to be toss under Trump’s bus.
Her runs the other way and calls it transparency.
Se the facts of reality in real time and not believe Trump’s double speak from his alternate reality.
Can’t it be seen that Trump is wanting all he can take with him and float out on the his lies supported by fearful republican representatives in Congress and SCOTUS he corrupted.
Trump has not told the truth, the truth is not in him, that why the law is after him and he will not be free of his past.
Trump will try to transfer responsibility for his own wrongs onto others who were not involved in his schemes. He is hiding in plain sight behind his deluded loyalist. When that group smartens up, he will be left naked in the street and out of others covering up for him.
Almost impossible to read a posted topic because of the torrent of ads that keep popping up!
Trump never admits he is wrong he was raised to never admit he is wrong
You can bring a bull (Putin) to water (to Alaska), but you can’t make him drink (blood from Ukraine).
