Jason Brian Gavidia once proudly called himself a Trump supporter — even wearing his patriotism on his skin with the opening words of the U.S. Constitution, “We the people,” tattooed in bold black letters across his back.
But after a frightening run-in with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, the 29-year-old says his political views have taken a sharp turn.
Gavidia and his friend Javier Ramirez, both U.S. citizens, were walking in Montebello, California, when masked ICE agents armed with rifles stopped them and demanded proof of citizenship. “I am American, bro!” Gavidia protested, as one officer barked, “What hospital were you born in?” Gavidia replied he didn’t remember, but said, “East L.A., bro!”
Ramirez filmed the encounter until he was wrestled to the ground and hauled off to a detention center. “I believe I was racially profiled. I believe I was attacked because I was walking while brown,” Gavidia told NBC Los Angeles.

The experience left him shaken — and disillusioned. “He ran on lies,” Gavidia said of former President Trump. “We were all manipulated, we were all brainwashed, and now look at us. We’re all suffering because of it. And I feel guilty 100 percent.”
Gavidia is now one of the plaintiffs in a class-action lawsuit filed by the ACLU that resulted in a court order barring ICE from arresting people in seven Southern California counties based on race, accent, or place of work.
Today, he’s channeling his anger into activism, hosting “Know Your Rights” workshops and handing out cards that explain what immigrants should do when approached by federal agents.
“I carry the Constitution with me now,” he said, waving his pocket-sized copy. “Where’s the freedom? Where’s the justice? That’s why I’m protecting the Constitution.”
