It was supposed to be a rare opportunity for Rep. Doug LaMalfa to reconnect with his rural Northern California constituents. Instead, Monday night’s town hall in Chico spiraled into a profanity-laced referendum on President Donald Trump’s domestic agenda — and on LaMalfa’s unwavering loyalty to it.
LaMalfa, a staunch Trump ally and long-time House Republican, walked into the packed Elks Lodge after nearly eight years of avoiding in-person forums. He walked out facing the kind of backlash that has become increasingly common for GOP lawmakers trying to defend Trump’s controversial policies in their own districts.
The 650-plus attendees came armed with statistics, personal stories, and decades-old grudges — and they were ready to shout them.
“You’re a liar,” one man yelled repeatedly. Others called LaMalfa an “a—–e” and “full of it.” At one point, after a moderator tried to calm tensions, a voice from the audience shouted back, “F— you!”
The jeers began early, when LaMalfa attempted to promote Trump’s “Big Beautiful” budget bill — legislation that slashes over $1.1 trillion from Medicaid, Medicare, and Affordable Care Act plans, cuts the Department of Veterans Affairs, and axes funding for public media. The Congressional Budget Office projects 10 million Americans could lose health coverage if the bill becomes law.
When LaMalfa claimed VA funding wasn’t being cut, a veteran who has struggled with PTSD care since Trump took office stood up and said, “It worked just fine before you started ‘fixing’ it.” He then left the room, muttering, “I don’t appreciate that man.”
The Epstein scandal — which continues to dog Trump — proved another flashpoint. Several voters grilled LaMalfa on why Republicans have refused to release the full files from the late sex offender’s criminal network.
“You all left,” one woman said sharply, accusing House GOP leadership of ducking the vote. “The Speaker released you so you didn’t have to deal with it.”
Recent polling shows even a majority of Republicans disapprove of how the Trump administration has handled the matter. Trump and Epstein were friends for more than a decade, and photographs of the two together remain a political liability.
Northern California farmers also made their anger clear. Trump’s aggressive tariff policy — touted as a way to “bring manufacturing back to America” — has instead driven up costs on everything from tractor parts to fertilizer.
“If you’re not here to resign, why aren’t you here to apologize?” a Chico farmer demanded. “Our margins were already thin. You and Trump just crushed them.”
LaMalfa, who chairs the House Agriculture Committee’s forestry and horticulture subcommittee, dodged the question, insisting the tariffs were part of a “strategic trade posture.” The crowd laughed bitterly.
January 6 Shadows
The conversation inevitably turned to January 6, 2021, when a violent mob stormed the Capitol to overturn the 2020 election results. Several constituents demanded to know why LaMalfa still supports Trump.
“We are not headed towards authoritarian fascist government,” one man said, drawing roaring applause. “We are already there.”
Another voter, speaking in a calmer tone, told LaMalfa, “If you need help pulling away from this, we’ll help you. I’m serious, even if it sounds like a joke.”
A Pattern of GOP Backlash
LaMalfa’s hostile reception mirrors scenes playing out in Republican districts across the country. GOP lawmakers are struggling to defend Trump’s sweeping budget, his trade wars, and his increasingly aggressive use of federal power — including controversial immigration raids that constituents in Chico compared to “kidnappings.”
Party leaders have quietly advised members to skip in-person events and stick to virtual formats. LaMalfa ignored that advice. Monday night showed why they give it.
As one woman leaving the meeting put it bluntly: “We came here to be heard. He came here to spin. That’s why we booed.”

Democrats are no longer those of days where parties worked together for the good. They created chaos and violence wherever they go. Unity is a word they use but never act upon. Their way or the highway and the Country is in chaos of non citizens who are criminals thanks to them. You cannot talk to people who do not want peace or progress for humanity. Control only is their goal.
