Travelers at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport were stunned—and disgusted—when brown liquid began raining from the ceiling near Gate T11 on Sunday, quickly escalating into a full ceiling collapse.

Video footage captured by eyewitness Jamaal Carlos Jr. shows what appears to be sewage water gushing onto the terminal floor as stunned passengers watch in disbelief. “It had been pouring consistently for maybe 10-15 seconds,” Carlos told 11 Alive. “And it just progressively got worse. The ceiling fell through and it stinks really bad.”

Carlos said it took five to ten minutes for airport staff to arrive and start the cleanup, but by then, the damage was done—and many travelers had already walked straight through the murky mess.

“I thought they would get buckets or do something, but people were walking through it,” he said.

Eventually, yellow caution tape went up, forcing passengers to reroute through different parts of the terminal. Still, the damage wasn’t easily escaped.

“You can still smell it two or three gates down,” Carlos added. He also noted that chunks of debris continued to fall from the ceiling before the flow of water finally stopped.

A spokesperson for the airport confirmed the incident, stating that cleanup and sanitization were completed and normal operations resumed. The exact cause of the leak remains under investigation. Officials also confirmed that airport representatives were on hand to help redirect passengers and that flights were not affected.

The shocking event is the second bizarre airport incident this year involving mysterious odors or leaks. Back in June, several airline and airport employees at Charlotte Douglas International Airport were hospitalized after reporting “inhalation symptoms” from an unidentified odor that came from an aircraft.

American Airlines said the smell was detected before passengers boarded the plane. Crew members were treated and released from a nearby hospital, and the aircraft was pulled from service for inspection. That flight, headed to Los Angeles, was ultimately canceled.

As for Atlanta’s unexpected downpour, passengers are just thankful it didn’t land on them mid-latte.

“Imagine just sitting at the gate and suddenly brown water starts pouring down from the ceiling,” one traveler wrote on X. “This airport is a war zone.”
