A quiet morning on one of America’s largest Army installations turned into chaos Wednesday when a gunman opened fire, injuring five U.S. soldiers in what authorities are calling an “active shooter” situation.

The violence broke out just before 11 a.m. in the area of the 2nd Armored Brigade Combat Team, according to Fort Stewart officials. Military police and emergency responders rushed to the scene, and the suspect was taken into custody at approximately 11:35 a.m.—less than 40 minutes after the first shots rang out.

“There is no active threat to the community,” the base confirmed in a statement. However, the aftermath has sent shockwaves across military families and personnel.

All five wounded soldiers were transported to Memorial Health University Medical Center in Savannah, roughly 40 miles away. The extent of their injuries has not yet been released, but hospital officials described it as an “ongoing trauma response.”

Video from the scene shows law enforcement vehicles flooding the base, with sirens piercing the still morning air. Helicopters hovered overhead as base security locked down the area and began evacuations. Soldiers were seen escorting colleagues out of buildings with weapons drawn and medics on standby.

Georgia Governor Brian Kemp took to social media to address the unfolding situation. “We are keeping the victims, their families, and all those who answer the call to serve in our hearts and prayers,” he wrote on X (formerly Twitter).

President Donald Trump was briefed early Wednesday afternoon, with White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt confirming the administration is “closely monitoring the situation and offering full support.”

While the suspect’s identity has not been released, sources told ABC News the individual is believed to be another soldier assigned to the base. Investigators are currently interviewing witnesses and combing through evidence at the scene.

One military official, speaking on condition of anonymity, said tensions had recently escalated within the brigade, though it remains unclear if personal or professional motives were at play.

“We’re all just shaken,” said one soldier stationed at Fort Stewart, who asked not to be named. “You don’t expect this to happen inside the wire.”

As authorities work to piece together what led to this shocking breach of security, questions about base safety and mental health protocols within the military are already surfacing.

This is not the first time Fort Stewart has faced tragedy. In 2020, a soldier shot and killed his wife on base before turning the gun on himself. That incident led to a review of internal security procedures—a review now likely to be reopened in light of Wednesday’s violence.

The Army’s Criminal Investigation Division is leading the investigation, while base operations have resumed under heightened security.

This is a developing story. More updates to follow as information becomes available.

When I was in Vietnam in 1971, more U.S. Troops were dying of drug addiction than enemy actions…

  1. Is it possible that this attack was done by a person that joined the US military to destroy us from within. An associate of Muslims etc
