In a political soap opera straight out of a Southern courtroom drama, Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton is back in the hot seat—this time, accused of orchestrating a brazen mortgage scheme while his marriage implodes in public view.
Angela Paxton, his wife of over 30 years and a Texas state senator, filed for divorce earlier this month on what she called “biblical grounds,” citing her husband’s extramarital affair and saying she could no longer reconcile her Christian values with their fractured union. Now, financial fraud allegations threaten to further unravel the Paxtons’ image as the state’s premier MAGA power couple.
According to an investigation by the Associated Press and The New York Times, Ken and Angela Paxton allegedly lied on mortgage applications for three separate properties, each falsely listed as their “primary residence” in order to lock in lower interest rates. Mortgage fraud is a federal and state crime.
On top of that, the couple is accused of double-dipping into Texas’ homestead tax exemption program—illegally claiming two properties for a tax break meant for only one. One of those homes is worth over $1.1 million.
“If this were a Democrat, Fox News would be screaming ‘lock them up’ around the clock,” said Rep. Joaquin Castro (D-TX) in a statement Friday. “This is just another example of MAGA corruption hiding behind Bible verses and campaign slogans.”
Hypocrisy in High Places
What makes the allegations even more galling for critics is that Paxton’s office is one of the primary agencies responsible for investigating mortgage fraud in Texas. That means the top cop in the state may have violated the very laws he’s supposed to enforce—without facing serious scrutiny.
“He’s playing both sheriff and outlaw,” said legal analyst Maya Ruiz. “And under Trump’s Department of Justice, there’s little chance he’ll be held accountable at the federal level either.”
Despite President Trump’s frequent accusations of “mortgage fraud” against his enemies—like Sen. Adam Schiff (D-CA) and New York Attorney General Letitia James—he has remained silent on Paxton’s case. The irony wasn’t lost on political observers.
“Donald Trump screams ‘fraud’ when Black women prosecute him, but goes mute when his MAGA foot soldiers are caught red-handed,” tweeted MSNBC host Mehdi Hasan.
A Web of Deceit
Here’s what investigators found:
- Three Primary Residences: The Paxtons reportedly declared three different properties as their primary home—a $1.5 million mansion in suburban Dallas and two rental properties in Austin.
- Illegal Homestead Tax Breaks: The couple allegedly claimed homestead exemptions on both the Dallas and Austin homes, a clear violation of Texas law.
- Rented Out ‘Personal Use’ Property: A home in College Station was supposed to be for “exclusive personal use,” according to the mortgage. Instead, they rent it out.
- Airbnb Deception: The crown jewel of the portfolio—a five-bedroom luxury cabin in Broken Bow, Oklahoma—is available on Airbnb, even though the mortgage explicitly prohibits renting.
The Paxtons have refused to comment. The Daily Beast, AP, and The New York Times all reached out.
Not Their First Scandal
Ken Paxton has been plagued by legal troubles for nearly a decade. In 2015, he was indicted on securities fraud charges. In 2023, he was impeached by the Texas House over corruption allegations related to his affair. Though acquitted by the GOP-controlled Senate, his wife recused herself from the vote.
Meanwhile, Ken Paxton has launched a primary challenge against Republican Sen. John Cornyn for the 2026 U.S. Senate race—a move many Democrats now see as laughable.
“He’s trying to move up while his life’s on fire,” said Texas Democratic strategist Olivia Martínez. “It’s like trying to campaign from the ashes of your own credibility.”
With Trump once again in the White House and loyalists like Paxton enjoying near-immunity from prosecution, many Democrats fear the country is entering a new phase of what they call “legalized lawlessness.”
Angela Paxton, for her part, said she pursued reconciliation, but added:
“In light of recent discoveries, I do not believe that it honors God or is loving to myself, my children, or Ken to remain in the marriage.”
As the Paxtons’ public empire crumbles, it raises a stark question for Texas voters—and the country at large:
If this is what MAGA morality looks like behind closed doors, what’s happening inside the halls of power?
