“What are you afraid of?” Booker demands as GOP rushes vote on controversial ex-Trump lawyer.
Tempers exploded on Capitol Hill Thursday as every Democrat on the Senate Judiciary Committee walked out in protest, slamming what they called a sham process to install one of President Trump’s personal loyalists onto a powerful federal court.
The flashpoint? Emil Bove — a former Justice Department official and longtime Trump defense attorney — who is now on a fast track to sit on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit.
Democrats had demanded more time to investigate serious whistleblower allegations against Bove, including claims from former DOJ lawyer Erez Reuveni. But their calls were brushed aside by Committee Chair Chuck Grassley (R-IA), who bulldozed ahead with the vote.
“What are you so afraid of?” Sen. Cory Booker (D-NJ) shouted as Grassley tried to gavel him down. “We’re asking for time — not a veto. Just time to debate.”
Grassley refused.
The room erupted.
Moments later, Booker and his Democratic colleagues stood up and walked out — a dramatic, coordinated protest against what they described as an assault on Senate norms and judicial independence.
“Dear God,” Booker said on his way out. “This is not how democracy works.”
Bove isn’t just any nominee. He once defended Trump during multiple high-profile investigations and has been a vocal critic of what he calls the “weaponization of the courts” against conservatives.
Earlier this year, Trump made it clear he wanted “warrior judges” who would “protect this country from liberal sabotage.” Bove, many Democrats fear, fits that mold perfectly.
“Donald Trump isn’t nominating judges. He’s installing loyal operatives,” said Sen. Sheldon Whitehouse (D-RI) in a statement. “This isn’t about justice — it’s about control.”
While the committee’s Republicans voted to advance Bove’s nomination without debate, his path to final confirmation in the full Senate is anything but certain. Moderate senators — including some in tight re-election races — could be swayed by the growing controversy.
Outside groups are already mobilizing.
The American Constitution Society blasted the vote as “a naked power grab,” while MoveOn called Bove “the most dangerous judicial nominee of the Trump era.”
Meanwhile, the whistleblower report — which remains under wraps — is expected to be leaked within days.
With Democrats outnumbered on the Judiciary Committee but holding the power to slow floor proceedings, Thursday’s drama may only be the beginning.
“This is a warning shot,” one Democratic aide said. “If they think we’re going to roll over while Trump packs the courts with extremists, they’re dead wrong.”
