President Donald Trump’s grip on power may be intact, but his support among everyday Americans is cracking fast — even as his MAGA loyalists cling tighter than ever.
A new Economist/YouGov poll released over the weekend delivers a harsh reality check for the embattled second-term president: Trump’s disapproval rating has soared to 55%, the highest yet since his 2025 inauguration. His approval has dropped to just 41%, down a point from last week — and miles from the 49% he held when he returned to office in January.
The poll, which surveyed 1,680 U.S. adults across the political spectrum, reveals a growing sense of dissatisfaction outside of Trump’s base. While 92% of Republicans still support him, that number is slipping from the 94% honeymoon high he enjoyed early this year.
Among self-proclaimed MAGA Republicans, approval remains near-total at 98%, despite escalating tensions in the movement over explosive revelations tied to the Jeffrey Epstein files — a scandal some insiders warn could fracture the movement’s unity.
But it’s among independents and Democrats where Trump’s numbers have truly collapsed.
His approval with Democrats has plummeted to a humiliating 3%, down from 12% in January — a near-total rejection. With independents, who helped tip the scales in key swing states in the 2024 election, approval has eroded to 29%, a steep dive from 41% when Trump was sworn in.
“This isn’t just a slump — it’s a loud, national warning signal,” said Democratic strategist Lena Watkins. “People are exhausted. The chaos, the vendettas, the constant scandals — the majority of Americans are done playing along.”
Critics say Trump’s second term has been defined more by grievance than governance. Since January, he’s lashed out at political opponents, reshaped federal agencies to serve partisan goals, and inflamed culture war battles over education, immigration, and reproductive rights.
Meanwhile, the country is facing growing unrest. Federal courts are flooded with legal challenges to Trump’s executive actions, state governors are openly rebelling against federal mandates, and the economy is showing signs of strain as uncertainty rocks Wall Street.
Even some in conservative media are taking notice. An anonymous Fox News producer admitted, “The base is still there, but the rest of the country’s tuning out. The Trump fatigue is real.”
And with 2026 midterms on the horizon, Democrats see a path forward.
“Donald Trump is his own worst enemy,” said Rep. Carmen Rodriguez (D-NY). “Let him talk. Let him rage. The American people are watching — and they’re done.”
As the summer of 2025 heats up, Trump remains defiant, but his shrinking approval numbers suggest the heat may finally be catching up to him.
