In a stunning Monday night vote, House Republicans blocked a Democratic push to unseal the Jeffrey Epstein files—despite Donald Trump once promising full transparency. Now, critics say the GOP is protecting the powerful, while cracks deepen within the MAGA movement itself.
The House Rules Committee narrowly rejected the measure, voting 6-5 against adding an amendment to crypto-related legislation that would have required the Justice Department to publish all Epstein-related documents online. Only one Republican, Rep. Ralph Norman of South Carolina, joined Democrats in backing the proposal.
The amendment, introduced by Rep. Ro Khanna (D-CA), was never expected to pass. But its intent was clear: to expose what Democrats call a “massive backtrack” by Trump and his loyalists.

“Trump Wants This Buried”
“Trump is posting that we should all just move on,” said Rep. Jim McGovern (D-MA), the committee’s top Democrat. “Well, I want to know what the hell is in these files. And I think we all want to know why Trump is suddenly changing his tune and is so desperate to sweep this under the rug.”
McGovern pointed to Republican campaign rhetoric from 2024, when the party vowed to release Epstein’s files if returned to power.
“Republicans said, ‘Trust us. Vote for us and we will release these files.’ And here we are—they are backtracking. It’s cowardly,” he added.
The Picture Trump Doesn’t Want You to See
One now-infamous photo, circulating again on social media, shows Donald and Melania Trump alongside Jeffrey Epstein and Ghislaine Maxwell at Mar-a-Lago in 2000. The image has become symbolic of what many critics view as Trump’s deep discomfort with public scrutiny of his past.
Despite promising to “release it all” on the campaign trail, Trump now says the Epstein issue is a distraction, not a priority. Over the weekend, he lashed out at critics on Truth Social, calling them “selfish people” hurting his “perfect” administration.
Pam Bondi’s Vanishing “Client List”
Further complicating matters, Attorney General Pam Bondi—handpicked by Trump—told Fox News back in February that she was in possession of a “client list” connected to Epstein. That statement lit up right-wing forums and prompted calls for immediate release from both sides of the aisle.
Instead, the Department of Justice and FBI last week issued a joint memo claiming no such list exists and that all relevant investigations are closed. The memo declared Epstein died by suicide, contradicting widespread suspicions—even within Trump’s own base.
MAGA vs. MAGA
That memo set off a political grenade inside the GOP. Hardline MAGA supporters, who once believed Trump would “drain the swamp,” now accuse his administration of protecting it.
“We were promised transparency. Instead, we’re getting cover-ups,” one conservative activist wrote in a viral X thread. “This is why the base is splintering.”
Trump’s allies are scrambling to contain the fallout. Bondi has refused further comment, while top Republicans like Rep. Virginia Foxx (R-NC) say they trust “the president’s timing” when it comes to releasing sensitive information.
Rep. Khanna, speaking to MSNBC after the vote, didn’t mince words: “This is about whose side you’re on. Are you with everyday Americans who deserve the truth? Or are you protecting the rich and well-connected?”

The Epstein scandal is once again at the heart of America’s trust crisis. For a country still grappling with elite impunity, secret flights, and a prison death that’s never sat right with anyone, the GOP’s refusal to release the files raises red flags.
