President Donald Trump is facing a potentially devastating political setback just days before the midterm elections, and one of the clearest warnings is coming from an unlikely source: Fox News.

With Americans preparing to vote on November 3, the conservative-leaning network’s latest election forecast suggests Republicans are headed for a major defeat in the House of Representatives, potentially handing Democrats a commanding majority and dramatically reshaping the final two years of Trump’s presidency.

The numbers released Tuesday, October 27, paint an increasingly grim picture for the GOP, with Fox News projecting Democrats could capture anywhere from 223 to 240 House seats under its main scenarios. An especially strong Democratic showing could push that number as high as 252.

Republicans, meanwhile, face a far more difficult path. Fox’s analysis places 195 seats in the GOP column, with even a favorable Election Night scenario potentially leaving the party with approximately 212 seats — six short of the 218 needed to control the chamber.

For Trump, who has spent weeks campaigning to protect his party’s narrow congressional majority, the projections represent an alarming development at the worst possible moment.

And Fox News is hardly alone.

The nonpartisan Cook Political Report delivered an equally troubling assessment on October 23, shifting another 19 House races toward Democrats as polling and campaign spending patterns suggested Republican candidates were struggling to regain momentum.

The election forecaster now rates 220 seats as favoring Democrats, compared with 198 for Republicans, leaving 17 races classified as toss-ups.

Its assessment of the GOP’s chances was particularly striking, declaring that Republicans’ prospects of maintaining their House majority had “all but evaporated.”

Political analyst Erin Covey suggested the biggest remaining question might not be whether Democrats win, but just how large their majority could become.

Cook’s latest projections indicate Democrats could gain between 12 and 22 seats, a potentially significant rebuke of the Republican Party during Trump’s second term.

Perhaps even more concerning for the White House is what appears to be driving the shift.

According to Fox News’ own analysis, growing numbers of independent, rural and Hispanic voters are expressing frustration with Trump and showing a willingness to support Democratic candidates.

A recent national survey found Democrats leading Republicans by 11 percentage points when voters were asked which party they would support for Congress.

The president’s approval ratings are also creating serious challenges for his party. Fox reported that Trump’s approval had fallen from 44 percent before the war with Iran to 36 percent in its latest survey.

Economic concerns appear to be playing a major role in the political backlash, with Americans increasingly focused on inflation, gasoline prices and the cost of everyday necessities.

In Fox’s October polling, 85 percent of voters expressed concern about inflation, while 83 percent cited gas prices and 79 percent pointed to government leadership.

Democrats held double-digit advantages over Republicans on several of those issues, including a 16-point lead on handling inflation and a 12-point advantage on gas prices.

Those findings could be especially troubling for Republicans who have spent months defending Trump’s economic policies while trying to convince voters that their financial outlook is improving.

Meanwhile, CNN chief data analyst Harry Enten has issued an even more dramatic warning, suggesting Democrats could be headed toward a congressional landslide.

After examining extensive polling and election forecasts, Enten estimated a 71 percent chance that either party would win at least 230 House seats, a result he classified as a blowout.

But the odds were overwhelmingly tilted toward Democrats.

According to Enten, Democrats have a 69 percent chance of reaching that threshold, while Republicans have just a 2 percent chance of achieving the same result.

His central projection puts Democrats at approximately 238 House seats, up from 232 in August.

The implications of a Democratic takeover would extend far beyond Election Night.

If Democrats regain control of the House, they would gain the power to lead congressional committees, issue subpoenas, launch investigations and block much of Trump’s legislative agenda.

A Democratic majority could also intensify scrutiny of the administration’s handling of federal spending, immigration enforcement and foreign policy, setting the stage for two years of increasingly contentious battles between Congress and the White House.

The Senate remains a more uncertain contest, however. Fox News currently rates that chamber as a toss-up, with Democrats facing a difficult electoral map despite improving prospects in several competitive states.

And despite the increasingly favorable projections, Democrats have not secured a victory. Polling errors, turnout differences and unexpected developments in closely contested districts could still alter the outcome.

Nevertheless, the growing agreement among major election forecasters has created an unmistakable warning for Republicans.

Just one week before voters head to the polls, the party that entered the election season hoping to preserve Trump’s congressional advantage is now facing the possibility of a sweeping Democratic comeback.

For the president, the most uncomfortable part may be that the latest warning isn’t coming from one of his usual political opponents.

It’s coming from Fox News itself.
