In an unexpected cultural counterpunch to President Trump’s second term, Barack and Michelle Obama are partnering with comedy legend Larry David to launch a scathing new sketch comedy series for HBO—set to air during America’s 250th anniversary.

The six-episode limited series, still untitled, will take aim at American history through satire, absurdity, and plenty of uncomfortable truths. And yes, Larry David is writing, producing, and starring—because who better to dissect centuries of national dysfunction than the man who made neurosis an art form?

But it’s the unlikely trio behind the show that’s raising eyebrows: the former president, the former first lady, and the former king of cringe comedy.

“I’ve sat across the table from dictators and gridlocked Congress,” Obama deadpanned in a press release. “But nothing has prepared me for working with Larry David.”

The project is a collaboration between HBO and the Obamas’ production company, Higher Ground—a company the couple founded in 2018 to spotlight diverse, bold voices in media. Until now, their projects have leaned toward the earnest and inspirational: Oscar-winning documentaries, uplifting kids’ shows, civil rights dramas. But this marks a sharp turn.

A former president and a comedy icon roasting U.S. history? In this political climate? Let’s just say the timing isn’t accidental.

While David, 78, recently retired Curb Your Enthusiasm, his appetite for chaos clearly remains. In his typically absurd statement, David said he had planned to “harvest organic honey” after retiring—until his bees vanished.

“And so, it is with a heavy heart that I return to television,” he sighed, “hoping to ease the loss of my beloved hive.”

The series will also reunite David with Curb showrunner Jeff Schaffer, who will co-write and direct. Set to coincide with the semiquincentennial—the 250th anniversary of the nation’s founding—it’s expected to use sketch comedy to skewer historical myths, political hypocrisy, and what David reportedly called “America’s collective cognitive dissonance.”

HBO teased the premise with a wink: “The Obamas wanted to celebrate America’s history… but then Larry David called.”

No release date yet—but insiders say it’s already deep in production and could premiere early next year, just as Trump ramps up his re-election campaign.

Expect history. Expect irreverence. And expect fireworks—both on-screen and off.

This is one political reunion America didn’t see coming.
